A man said his wife is “horrified” that he would consider leaving their planned vacation early in the event that his ex, who has cancer, dies.
In a post on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, the man wrote that he recently found out that his ex-wife has terminal cancer, and it is now causing tension with his current wife, with whom he has been planning a “six-week holiday in Europe.”
Explaining that he and his ex welcomed two children, now in their 30s, before they divorced, the man said he has a “good relationship” with both of his kids and is “distantly cordial” with their mother, who he referred to as “M.”
So when he raised the possibility of potentially returning home early if his ex-wife were to die while he was away, so that he could provide emotional support to his two children, the man said that his wife was “horrified” and also took issue with the “extra cost of doing so.”
In an update, the man further detailed that he and his wife “booked the travel, but with fares that can be fairly easily changed to come back earlier.”

Reddit users overwhelmingly supported the man in the comments section of the post, as a number of them called out what they considered to be his wife’s cold-hearted outlook.
“If you go ahead and book a vacation, get traveler’s insurance and be sure it covers death in family. And then you go support your kids. Your wife is either shockingly insensitive or super insecure,” wrote one person.
“She’s more than an ex spouse, she’s also the mother of your children. She deserves some respect,” said another.
“They’re your CHILDREN regardless of the relationship you and she had and … it’s your responsibility as a father. Your wife should be proud, [not] upset,” added one other.
