Liechtenstein royal confirms engagement – 1 year after being linked to Princess Elisabeth

Congratulations are in order for Prince Georg of Liechtenstein and Princess Maria-Nives von der Leyen, as the couple’s engagement was announced on Friday.

The joyous news was confirmed by Georg’s parents, Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie. A statement read: “HRH Hereditary Prince Alois and HRH Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein are delighted to announce the engagement of their son Prince Georg to Princess Maria-Nives von der Leyen.”

It finished: “The wedding of Princess Maria-Nives and Prince Georg is expected to take place in Germany in late summer 2027.”

Georg is the third child of Alois and Sophie, and he previously studied at Malvern College in the UK. The 27-year-old royal currently works in business development for the tech sector in New York City.

Meanwhile, Princess Maria-Nives is the youngest daughter of Prince Philipp von der Leyen and Princess Elisabeth von der Leyen, who hail from the Leyen noble family of Germany. The 25-year-old has been working at a marketing agency in Vienna since 2024.

The announcement was accompanied by a picture of the happy couple sitting in a wooden structure, with Maria-Nives draping her arms over her husband-to-be. Maria-Nives looked gorgeous in a floral dress, but she kept her engagement ring out of sight.

Georg and Maria-Nives’ wedding will come two years after his older sister, Princess Maria Caroline, married Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer. In true princess style, the royal wore an incredible crown atop her perfectly coiffured blonde chignon.

Prince Georg’s romantic link

Although it’s believed that Georg and Maria-Nives have been dating for many years, in 2025 the prince ended up being linked with Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth, who will one day inherit the Belgian throne.

An image went viral that featured the pair in an embrace while seemingly on a holiday in Crete. At the time, the Belgian royal family said: “We have also seen the photo. We do not know whether it is real or artificial. We do not comment on private matters.”

However, HELLO! was later told by the House of Liechtenstein that the image was created with the use of artificial intelligence.

At the time, Belgian royal journalist Wim Dehandschutter told HELLO! that although Georg and Elisabeth were childhood friends, they would unlikely leak an image showing off a relationship.

“King Philippe and certainly Queen Mathilde guard their privacy like lions, and even more so that of their children,” he explained. And the Liechtensteiners are also legendary secretive. They’re an unknown but prestigious royal family and one of the wealthiest.

“Why would Elisabeth and Georg have any interest in leaking their relationship? And then in such a clumsy way, via a private photo that’s never completely private on Instagram?”
