Laverne Cox is paying homage to a legend!
The actress, 52, channeled the Queen of Pop Madonna during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark to promote her new show Clean Slate.
Cox wore a short-sleeved gray top with ruched cap sleeves and large black buttons, along with a tight black midi skirt that had a sheer lining. She accessorized the outfit with a gold chain belt, black silk gloves and a flat black hat.
The actress also wore strappy black heels with a pointed toe and a pair of statement diamond earrings to complete the dramatic look.
For her makeup, she opted for a classic style with a red lip, light eye shadow and winged eyeliner. Her hair was elegantly pulled back with a few face-framing pieces.
According to Cox, the look was inspired by Madonna’s “Take a Bow” music video, released in 1994 for her album Bedtime Stories.
“This is the look she wore,’ she explained to hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. “I’m styling it a little bit differently, it’s from John Galliano’s Spring/Summer 1995 collection. And I’ve been obsessed with it forever.”
The former E! red carpet presenter continued, “I’ve had this jacket for three years. I don’t know why I haven’t worn it yet, it’s one of my favorite pieces.”
Cox went on to compare the outfit to Dior’s infamous 1947 bar suit. “This is giving bar suit,” she said. “This is actually before Galliano was at Dior. It was like his bar suit before he was at Dior, almost an audition.”
Ripa went on to compliment the Orange Is the New Black alum for her knowledge of fashion history. The host said that when the actress appeared on her podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera, she wasn’t aware that she “such a student of fashion.”
“You have an apartment,” Ripa said to Cox, “and then across the hall, you have a second apartment that is your closet.”
The actress explained, “It’s a studio apartment! It’s a humble archival room.”

Ripa, however, called the room “extraordinary” and noted that there are “beautiful mannequins and everything is dressed.” She said, “It’s beautiful. The kind of museum I would want to go to.”
Cox explained that she enjoys the intersection of fashion and art. “When I did a video for Mugler, I dressed mannequins for the first time and discovered my love for dressing mannequins. It’s a strange thing to discover in your 50s,” she said. “They’re like life-sized Barbies. And I had the clothes in storage and I was like, ‘These are like works of art, I should be enjoying them. They should be on mannequins so I can enjoy them every day.’ ”
Consuelos joked, “You’re in this glamorous closet doing the podcast, while Kelly’s in our son’s room with comic books.”
The Daytime Emmy winner jumped to Ripa’s defense, saying, “These are the choices you make when you have kids,” as the two talk show hosts share three kids. “What’s so beautiful about my life is my disposable income, I don’t have to worry about a college fund or private school. I can worry about fashion!”
Cox’s show Clean Slate premieres Feb. 6 on Prime Video and follows the actress as Desiree, a proud trans woman who returns to her small town in Alabama when her New York City art gallery goes under. There, she reconnects with her father whom she has not seen since before her transition.
“She’s been in therapy and she’s found that she’s choosing unavailable men over and over again and her therapist says, ‘You have to go back to the source of the first unavailable man in your life,’ and that’s her daddy, played by the great George Wallace,” Cox explained. “Living legend George Wallace. He’s hilarious and beautiful in this show. I’m deeply honored.”
Ultimately, Cox said “it’s a show really about family: the families we’re born into, the families we choose. And it’s a show about unconditional love.”
