Lauren Graham’s Gilmore Girls character famously once proclaimed, “This is a jumbo coffee morning. I need coffee in an IV.” And the actress shares her obsession.

When Graham, 58, appeared on Call Her Daddy this week, host Alex Cooper asked about her favorite way to spend a day off, and naturally, it involved java.

“I worked for a big chunk of the year, and I’m in kind of a newish house that I haven’t gotten to spend a lot of time there,” Graham explained. “I really love doing very little. And my favorite thing about my house is, I put the coffee machine where the bedrooms are on the bedroom level.”

She added that she simply gets up, brews her cup of joe and returns to bed to do “every New York Times puzzle.”

Cooper was impressed with the relaxing morning routine, responding, “Saying that just made me realize, like, we’re all doing it wrong. It’s like, ‘Yeah. Why is my coffee machine on another floor?’”

The podcast host then asked for Graham’s coffee preference.

“First of all, I’ll drink coffee from the gas station,” Graham replied, adding that she also enjoys an order with a lot of “footnotes.”

“I like this vanilla creamer,” the actress went on. “And then I’ve started being this person, which is I have whipped cream in a can, and I put whipped cream on top of my coffee and cinnamon. It’s the best thing you’ve ever had.”

The whipped cream, she admitted, was only supposed to be for the holidays, but became a regular habit.

“I was like, ‘Certainly, no one can just have whipped cream on their coffee. That’s just decadent. And then I just kept it from Christmas. It’s so good.”

Cooper asked whether Lorelai Gilmore’s love for coffee — which lasted throughout the original series’ seven seasons and into Netflix’s 2016 revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life — was inspired by the actress herself or already written into the character when the show premiered in 2000.

“It was all there,” Graham said, then referring to an early scene between Lorelai and Luke Danes, the curmudgeonly proprietor of Luke’s Diner. “I mean, it’s in the first episode. Right? She goes and he’s you know, demands more coffee, and he’s like, you’ve had enough.”

She added that their shared caffeine craving was “one of the many kind of serendipitous aspects of that part and that time and that character,” noting, “We just shared a lot of traits.”

During the Call Her Daddy episode, which was released on Wednesday, April 2, Graham also revealed that one of her fast-talking character’s memorable outfits was from her own wardrobe.

“I think that ‘Everyone loves an Irish girl’ T-shirt that was my introduction to Instagram,” Graham told Cooper when asked if any of Lorelai’s clothes were actually hers.

Graham wore the shirt in her first Instagram selfie on St. Patrick’s Day in March 2024.

However, she clarified that she mostly relied on the costumes laid out for her when filming the show.

“You know, you’re going to work at 5 in the morning, so I wasn’t bringing in anything good. Also, her clothes were more fun, my clothes are not fun,” she said.
