The Landman season 2 finale nearly ended with Cooper getting arrested for killing fiancée Ariana’s rapist — and now Jacob Lofland is breaking his silence on the future of the show.
During the Sunday, January 18, episode of the hit Paramount+ series, Cooper (Lofland) convinced Ariana (Paulina Chávez) to report the assault to the police. This turned into Cooper being questioned after it turned out that man died from a heart attack once he was taken to the hospital.
“It’s really script by script. [Creator Taylor Sheridan and I] haven’t even really had that many conversations. I just get them and go, ‘OK, I guess we’re going this direction now,’” Lofland, 29, exclusively told Us Weekly. “Up to this point, we really haven’t talked about it.”
Once Cooper’s dad, Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton), caught wind of the situation, he made sure his son wouldn’t be charged. With help from Rebecca (Kayla Wallace), Tommy was able to keep the authorities from charging Cooper.
“One of the most fun parts of the finale was probably getting to work with Kayla in the interrogation room. As soon as I read that script, I was like, ‘I can’t wait to play this,’” the actor recalled. “Any time Kayla is on, it is so awesome to watch her switch from the sweetest, nicest person to go into this bulldog of a lawyer.”
According to Lofland, the plan was always to have Cooper avoid jail time. “As far as I know, what we see in the finale is exactly the way it was,” he added. “It started and originated — and we stayed pretty close to the path.”
Lofland wouldn’t rule out Cooper still being haunted by the murder in season 3, adding, “Just as a person, it’s something that they’ll definitely carry. It’s not something he’s gonna forget by any means. It’ll definitely weigh on him in some way, shape or form.”
Elsewhere in the finale, Tommy dealt with being fired by Cami (Demi Moore) by creating his own oil company. He got all of his former coworkers — and family — on board with them making plans to compete with M Tex Oil.
“Hopefully we possibly get back to the oil and do some stuff like that next season. Just really in the patch and working,” he teased. “Taylor always surprises us so I try not to have too many ideas in my head. I trust the process but I’m just looking forward to getting the scripts and seeing where we go all together.”
He continued: “There’s so many directions we could go in season 3 that I’m really not sure. There’s going to be roadblocks and bumps throughout it because nothing can be perfect. There’s a lot up in the air that we’re waiting to find out.”
Lofland also weighed in on Cooper and Ariana’s future — including a possible marriage and more kids.
“We kind of thought it might happen in season 2. It hasn’t happened yet so we’ll see. We’re stretching it out farther than we thought. Every time I would open the next script, I was like, ‘OK, this is the wedding.’ But here we are,” he said. “We’re all still waiting. I love it. I love the dynamic of it and there’s always a shock. That’s the fun of it. That’s the fun with the Taylor universe.”
