After 43 years together, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn remain one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples – although their romance certainly didn’t get off to a conventional start.
Kurt, 75, reflected on their decades-long relationship earlier this year, telling AARP that being with Goldie, 80, still “doesn’t feel like a long time”.
“She’s just a blast,” he said of his longtime partner, adding that he feels “incredibly lucky” for the life they have shared together.
But long before the children, grandchildren and more than four decades of shared history, there was a first date involving the Playboy Club, a break-in – and the police.
Kurt and Goldie had first crossed paths as young actors on Disney’s The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, but it wasn’t until they reunited years later while working on 1984 movie Swing Shift that sparks flew.
Both had been married before and had children from previous relationships, and Kurt recently recalled that when they reconnected in 1983 they made a simple pact: “Let’s have fun until we don’t.”
© Getty ImagesSpeaking on Harry Connick Jr.’s talk show Harry in 2017, Kurt recalled asking Goldie to go dancing with him because he was nervous about the dancing required for Swing Shift. Goldie was a trained dancer, while Kurt felt he needed some practice.
He tracked down somewhere playing the appropriate swing music – the Playboy Club – and the pair headed there together.
Although they never actually got around to dancing, Kurt said he was immediately enjoying Goldie’s company and neither wanted the evening to end.
© AFP via Getty ImagesTheir next stop was a house Goldie had recently bought and was renovating. There was just one problem: they couldn’t get inside normally. The couple broke into the property and began exploring the still-empty rooms, joking about where the furniture might eventually go.
Eventually they made their way upstairs, where the mood became considerably more romantic – only for their privacy to be spectacularly interrupted.
Police had apparently been alerted to the break-in and entered the property, catching the new couple together and shining a flashlight in their direction.
© Getty Images“That was our first date. It was a lot of fun,” Kurt later said. But that night, the police told the pair to get a hotel room. “Which we did,” Kurt admitted.
Goldie and Kurt went on to welcome son Wyatt Russell in 1986 and blended their existing families, including Goldie’s children Kate and Oliver Hudson and Kurt’s son Boston Russell.
Today they are grandparents to eight – and despite famously never marrying, their relationship appears as solid as ever.
