Kristin Cavallari isnât shying away from the details of her marriage and eventual split from Jay Cutler.
On Bunnie XOâs Dumb Blonde podcast, Cavallari, who was married to Cutler, 41, from 2013 to 2020, admitted that things between the couple âwere just never goodâ as she revealed how her troubled relationship with her father influenced her marriage.
âSo, the thing is, I was repeating a pattern with my dad. And because I hadnât done the work on my relationship with my dad â thatâs what you do, you know? I ended up marrying my dad,â Cavallari, 37, said. âAnd so, it really forced me then to work through my sâ, which is which is what I did.â
Following her 2020 divorce, Cavallari said she has âreally taken the time to get my sâ togetherâ to avoid ârepeating that patternâ in a future relationship.
âThings were just never good and we tried, we really did⊠We really did everything that we could,â she said of her marriage, which she called âtoxicâ because she âhadnât done the work on myself.â
âI was a fâing baby, I didnât know any better,â she said, referring to the fact that she was only 23 when she first started dating the former NFL player, who was 27. âWe were both young.â
Cavallari also admitted that she and Cutler â who is now engaged to Samantha Robertson â âactually went on a couple datesâ in the year following their divorce âtrying to seeâ if their relationship could be rekindled.
âBecause, man, itâs fâing hard,â she said. âAnd then I think â unless youâve gone through this, especially with a toxic marriage, itâs like, it has this hold on you⊠Itâs a fâing trauma bond. And until you can really break that, I would go back [to Cutler] a couple times and be like, âI know itâs not right, but, like, why am I doing it?'â
Eventually, though, Cavallari said that for the â18th millionth time was like, âI canât do this,'â and she cut it off for good. âThen I really did the work.â
The Laguna Beach alum also alleged her ex-husband is a âpathological liarâ as she told Bunnie XO, âThere are things from my marriage that I will never know, and Iâve just sort of had to let that go. Iâm over it now, and I can â thatâs why I can probably talk about it so freely.â
PEOPLE has reached out to Cutler for comment.
In October, Cavallari, who shares sons Camden, 12, and Jaxon, 10, and a 9-year-old daughter, Saylor, with Cutler, said that her âheart brokeâ in her marriage to the Bears quarterback.
âEven though Iâm the one that walked away, it was not what I wanted. It was not what I had envisioned,â she said on the Oct. 22 episode of her podcast Letâs Be Honest. âAnd I really tried fâing everything I could. Itâs just heartbreaking when you want something so badly but you just canât get there. And I would say my heart was broken for years in my marriage â I mean it was.â

However, she said that she and her ex are âin the best place that weâve been inâ lately.
âIt took four years. But things are really good with us now. So much so that we even sat together at one of Camdenâs basketball games recently, and that makes me so happy, because honestly, I never thought that we would get there. I really didnât.â
