King Frederik of Denmark is among the European royals brought up in the Epstein files. Documents published by the U.S. Department of Justice in late January revealed correspondence mentioning the Danish royal, who was crown prince at the time.

In one email from March 2012, Ian Osborne wrote to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein that he was in Denmark and would be seeing “the Crown Prince” in the morning. In a separate email forwarded to Epstein in July 2012, Frederik, referred to as “HRH The Crown Prince of Denmark,” was listed among 22 guests, including his private secretary Morten Roland Hansen, who were confirmed for a dinner in a private room.

It’s unclear whether Frederik, the older son of Denmark’s former Queen Margrethe II, ended up attending the dinner and if Epstein was in attendance as well, though the Danish Royal House has confirmed to HELLO! that the king never met Epstein.

In both emails, Frederik was not identified by name, but rather by title. Frederik was the crown prince of Denmark for 52 years until he ascended the throne in January 2024. He has been married to his wife Queen Mary since 2004, and together the pair share four children: Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine

Princess Sofia of Sweden’s mention

Frederik isn’t the only royal from a Scandinavian country mentioned in the Epstein files. Sweden’s Princess Sofia also appeared in the files. A 2010 email from someone with the initials BE to Epstein included a picture of Sofia with the message: “Here is a photo of our Sofia – you remember – i.e. soon Princess Sofia… the whole Swedish press is looking for her…while she is in Africa..!”

A spokesperson for the Swedish Royal Court told HELLO!, “Princess Sofia recalls meeting Mr Epstein on a few occasions around 20 years ago, many years before the Princess became a member of the Royal Family.

“We wish to clarify that the meetings in question took place in social settings, such as at a restaurant and a movie premiere. We are aware that the Princess’ name (misspelled) is reported to have been found in a document from a premiere in 2012.

“However, the Princess does not know how her name has ended up on this list. Her Royal Highness was in Sweden at the time and had – as stated above – not met Mr Epstein for several years.”

Sofia herself has also explained her contact with Epstein. On February 10, she told members of the press, translated to English: “I met him in a couple of social settings. But now that I have read about all the horrific crimes he has subjected young women to, I am so grateful that I have had nothing to do with him since those few occasions in my twenties.”

The princess continued: “My thoughts go out to all the victims of crime. I hope there is justice in this. We met at a restaurant in a social context when I was introduced and at a film screening. Thank goodness that was all.”

Norway’s future queen implicated

Meanwhile, in Norway, Crown Princess Mette-Marit had a friendship with Epstein, one she now regrets. Messages between the two have become public, including one in which the crown princess wrote: “You always make me smile because you tickle my brain.”

The Norwegian Royal House has stated that Mette-Marit, whose son Marius Borg Høiby is currently on trial for rape, “strongly disavows Epstein’s abuse and criminal acts. She is very sorry for not having understood early enough what kind of person he was. The Crown Princess wants to tell about what happened and explain herself in more detail. She cannot do that now. The Crown Princess is in a very demanding situation. She hopes for understanding that she needs time to gather herself”.

The crown princess expressed her “deepest regret” for her friendship with Epstein in a statement shared on February 6. “It is important for me to apologize to all of you that I have disappointed. Some of the content of the messages between Epstein and me does not represent the person I want to be,” she said in her statement. “I also apologize for the situation that I have put the Royal Family in, especially the King and Queen.”
