It’s been just over 44 years since the wedding of the then-Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer, but the occasion still holds a special significance for many.
Around 750 million people worldwide tuned in to watch the magnificent ceremony, which was broadcast live from St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Royal fans across the globe were enraptured by the grandeur, the spectacle, what Diana wore.
But for India Hicks, Charles’s second cousin and goddaughter, there were other details that stood out. As a bridesmaid, the 13-year-old India got a different view of the momentous occasion. She gave HELLO! an insight into her memories during a Mother’s Day photoshoot, as she and her daughter Domino looked back at some of India’s most iconic looks over the years.
A ‘tough moment’ for India
India’s reaction to seeing Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding photo suggests it’s a photo she sees often, something which Domino confirms, revealing that the picture hangs upstairs in their family home in Oxfordshire.
“The thing about this is that it was a 1980s moment,” India says, reflecting on the moment.
“For me, it was quite a tough moment because I was quite a tomboy and I was never out of jeans. And I’d had this waist-length hair and I cut it [short] in Henley-on-Thames with someone who I think had just graduated from hairdressing school.
“It was an alarming hairdo.”
Clearly, the memory of this hairdo has influenced India’s decisions as a parent. Looking back at the photo, Domino quips, “I think this is why I was never allowed a bob. Probably for good reasoning, too.”
While tomboy-India might have struggled with her hairdo, she enjoyed another thoughtful aspect of the day. Watch the video to find out what she had to say.
