His Majesty King Charles III is currently in Scotland, and is set to arrive at Balmoral Castle any day now, for his annual summer break. The castle doors have now closed to members of the public, an announcement on Instagram confirmed on Monday, but fast-forward to Thursday, and the team have been forced to make a clarification about the closure.
A brand-new post, also on Instagram, explained that parts of the estate do remain open at the moment. It read: “While the grounds, gardens, restaurant and exhibitions at Balmoral are currently closed to the public, our Main Gate Gift Shop and Terrace Café are open daily from 10am until 4pm throughout August and September.
“Our Terrace Café is currently serving a delicious range of burgers, ciabattas, soup and bacon rolls, alongside a lovely selection of cakes and sweet treats.
“If you’re travelling to the area or simply passing by, we invite you to come and say hello, browse our wide selection of gifts and enjoy a refreshment at the gates of Balmoral.”
A sell-out success story
Since King Charles inherited Balmoral Castle from his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, he decided to open the doors of Balmoral Castle to members of the public to tour the inside for the first time. After it was a sell-out success in 2024, His Majesty has continued with the venture in subsequent years.
During the opening period, visitors are able to see the Entrance Hall, the Red Corridor, the Library, the Family Dining Room and the Drawing Room inside the iconic castle. These are rooms still used by the royal family regularly, and the library is a place that acts as Charles’ study when he is staying in Scotland.

Royal family summers are synonymous with Balmoral – the family enjoy spending time off-grid to unplug from royal duties and normal life for a few weeks. Charles will be joined by his wife Queen Camilla, as well as various other members of the family such as Prince Edward and Prince William, either simultaneously or on rotation.
Pastimes at the iconic estate include walking, fishing, horse riding and enjoying a good British picnic. This will also be a chance for Charles to spend time with his grandchildren, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. We know that the late Queen Elizabeth II liked to invite as many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as possible for a private family break.
