Kate Middleton ‘sheds old version’ of herself with blonde hair transformation ahead of Prince George milestone

The school holidays are coming to an end, meaning the Princess of Wales is set to wave off her eldest child, Prince George, to boarding school, while her in-laws Prince Harry and Meghan Markle simultaneously move back to the UK, casting a spotlight on the royal family dynamics.

With all this change happening quietly behind the scenes, Kate, 44, has chosen to reinvent herself with a subtle but powerful hair transformation. Over the weekend, the royal was spotted putting on a united front with her husband Prince William, their three kids, King Charles and Queen Camilla near Balmoral, where they typically holiday in the summer.

While some fans honed in on Kate’s country-chic attire and bold beauty look, many noted that her famous long brunette tresses looked visibly lighter. The mother-of-three’s hair fell in soft waves past her shoulders, with warmer tones adding dimension around her face.

According to hair experts, this has brightened Kate’s complexion and softened her facial features for an overall youthful look.

Suzie McGill, International Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International, who has 20 years of experience as a hair educator, told HELLO!: “Honey blonde highlights are perfect for the transition to the autumnal months. Focusing on face-framing highlights at the front of the hair will help to brighten the colour and add a glow to your complexion! 

“For Kate, lighter pieces have been blended throughout the top of her hair and around her face for a multi-dimensional finish, adding depth and framing her face beautifully.”

She added: “Whilst I do love Kate’s trademark brunette hue, the honey blonde shade harmonises perfectly with her warmer undertones; this colour makes her hazel-green eyes pop!”

Meanwhile, Jason Collier, a celebrity hairstylist with over 20 years of experience and the founder of Studio23 salon in London, similarly praised the “filter”-style results the colour has created, especially as the royal enters her mid-40s.

“Face-framing honey highlights act almost like a soft-focus filter around the face, reflecting light and bringing warmth to the complexion. As we move through our 40s, a very dark, solid colour can sometimes feel quite flat or emphasise shadows, whereas these warmer ribbons of colour create dimension and softness. 

“The result is brighter-looking skin and a more youthful, lifted feel without needing to go dramatically blonde.”

Both hair experts agreed that Kate did not need to make any drastic changes to get the desired refresh.

Jason revealed the results could be achieved with “finely woven highlights and a warmer, honey-toned gloss”, while Suzie thought it could be due to soft balayage or blended baby lights finished with a shadow root for a “beautiful sun-kissed finish.”

Major milestones often trigger a desire for a hair makeover – in Kate’s case, Prince George will be leaving behind their home, Forest Lodge, and boarding at Eton in September.

When asked how a lighter, brighter colour shift could be an uplifting way to mark a fresh chapter, Jerome Russell Bblonde Ambassador Jason explained: “It creates a sense of freshness and movement, almost like shedding an old version of yourself. It doesn’t have to be a dramatic makeover. Even subtle changes to tone, brightness and face-framing can give you that feeling of a fresh start.”
