The Princess of Wales left Prince William blushing after paying him a sweet compliment during their joint outing to Wales last week.
The royal couple, who are learning to speak Welsh, joined a local language learning group in the Gallery Cafe in Newtown. They were seen with a group of children taking part in an arts and crafts project. After taking part in the session with the children, Kate and William visited the cafe, shaking hands with language learners.
After sitting down, the Princess joked: “So you’re going to test us on our Welsh!” They soon discussed learning the language, with one participant gesturing to William. “He’s really really good,” she said, addressing the Princess.
The royal mother-of-three gave a quick glance to her husband, and quickly praised his efforts, telling them: “Yes I know, he’s very smart.” The Prince of Wales looked shy in response, going on to chat about what it’s like speaking both English and Welsh.
Analysing the moment – expert
Though William may have looked ‘shy’, his body language suggested that he secretly enjoyed hearing such praise from his wife.
Body language expert and celebrity psychic Inbaal Honigman told HELLO!: “When Princess Catherine mentions how smart Prince William is, he gazes downwards, smiling brightly. The lovely compliment has caught him off guard and he feels shy.
“The downwards gaze is shy, but the bright smile says that he’d love to hear more about how clever he is.
“William’s head tilts to the side, which suggests that he’s feeling loving and empathic. The head tilt exposes the ear, which is a sign that he’d love to hear more of the same. This unexpected compliment causes him to lean towards the Princess, which is a sign of trust and comfort. This little, gentle lean shows that he appreciates her words. He feels loved and loving when they are together.”
Elsewhere during the visit, William and Kate visited the town of Llanidloes, where they visited the Hanging Gardens community centre. They finished the trip with an outing at Hafan yr Afon, a cultural hub.
Throughout the visit, Inbaal said William was “attentive” and “sensitive” to his wife’s needs, which “spoke volumes” about their relationship, demonstrating “mutual trust and respect”.
William and Kate are learning to speak Welsh
Prince William and Kate stunned royal fans on Sunday as they released a joint message – with a very noticeable difference.
The Prince and Princess of Wales spoke fluently in Welsh to capture the message for their official social media channels, in a video filmed at Frogmore House on the Windsor Home Park estate. Once translated into English, Prince William said: “To everyone in Wales, a very Happy St David’s Day! It is a beautiful country, with a rich history and wonderful people.”
Meanwhile, Kate, 44, added: “Wales is very close to our hearts, and we look forward to every visit. Wishing you a day full of celebration with family and friends.” It was the first time that the Princess had been heard speaking in Welsh.
Afterwards, former head of royal protection Dai Davies said he was “full of admiration” that the Prince and Princess of Wales undertook such a tricky task, adding that he’s sure it will have been appreciated.
He told HELLO!: “I’m full of admiration. I think the majority of the Welsh nation would be happy that they are attempting to speak Welsh.
“For English people who are learning and trying to speak Welsh, I think it was great. Like the curate’s egg, it was reasonable in parts, but the main pronunciation was not quite there. But they tried and that’s super.” “Practice makes perfect,” he added.
