Kate Hudson helped run point on her latest TV wardrobe.

The star of Netflix’s new sports comedy, Running Point, told PEOPLE at the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Feb. 13 that she had “a lot” of input on her character’s outfits. Hudson, 45, plays Isla Gordon, who is appointed president of the L.A. Waves after her brother resigns due to a scandal.

“I worked with [Salvador Perez], our costume designer, and my stylist, Sophie Lopez, and we just sort of really wanted to get the evolution of her trying to figure out what her looks are — I think it matters to her,” Hudson explained. “What she’s becoming needed that arc, and we very quickly got into those colorful suits and loved the color. It was so fun.”

“Isla grew up very wealthy in Los Angeles,” she added. “She definitely likes to shop. She’s not wearing the same suit twice. She loves a little Hermès.”

Netflix has touted Running Point, which is loosely based on the life story of L.A. Lakers President Jeanie Buss, as a “twist on the underdog comedy.”

“Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job,” Netflix’s synopsis of the series reads.

Asked at the Running Point red carpet if she’s ever been underestimated or felt she needed to prove herself, Hudson pointed to early in her career.

“The auditioning process is that in a nutshell,” she tells PEOPLE. “I always say to young actors coming up that the auditioning process gets you prepared for how harsh actually having a job in this industry is when you actually start working because you’re constantly having to do the work, you’re constantly being rejected, and then every once in a while you have these little wings and you just have to keep going — and really proving that you can show up for the characters, show up for the job.”

Running Point also stars Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis and Max Greenfield.

Running Point — created by Elaine Ko, Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen — premieres on Feb. 27 on Netflix.
