The prodigal daughter returns in ABC’s brand new series, Shifting Gears!

On Monday, Dec. 30, ABC released the first trailer for its upcoming sitcom starring Kat Dennings and Tim Allen, titled Shifting Gears.

The new series follows Matt (Allen), a “stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop” but when his estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her two kids move back into his home, “the real restoration begins,” the show’s logline reads.

In addition to Dennings and Allen, who makes his sitcom return in the new series, other cast members include Seann William Scott as Gabriel, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch, Maxwell Simkins as Carter and Barrett Margolis as Georgia.

“Is that my GTO? I built that thing 15 years ago and somebody stole it,” Matt exclaims as a run-down car enters his garage. When his daughter exits the vehicle with her kids and a “Hey Dad,” he quips, “And there is the thief.”

Back at Matt’s home, he and Riley have a confrontation about how they last parted ways. When he notes that the last time she left the house she “looked back and gave me the double bird,” Riley sighs and adds, “I was 18 — the double bird is how I ended all our conversations.”

“I’m crawling home because I’m broke and need a place to stay until I figure out what the rest of my life looks like,” Riley admits in an honest conversation with Matt.

“You guys can stay here,” he says to which she replies in shock, “Really? Because I haven’t changed a lot!”

Despite their willingness to make amends, Matt and Riley’s relationship dynamic proves to be more difficult.

“Can we try to talk to each other like rational adults?” she asks as Matt jokes, “Have you watched the news lately? That’s not a thing anymore.”

The father-daughter duo reflects on how Riley’s mother “made a relationship between you and me possible” before her death.

“She was our bridge. Maybe we could build our own bridge?” Riley says, offering an olive branch.

“Okay, and then if I want to do something that you don’t like, you just look at the roof over your head and go, ‘Okay,'” he replies and Riley interjects, “I’m not sure you understand how bridges work.”
