Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel have nothing new to report when it comes to planning their upcoming nuptials.
“We don’t have any updates yet,” Scott, 47, exclusively told Us Weekly of their future wedding while discussing the 39th Annual Habitat for Humanity Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, which kicked off this week in Austin, Texas. “Yeah, we are the worst at planning that. We’re great at planning other parties.”
Jonathan’s twin brother, Drew Scott, joked, “You don’t have time for a wedding, you’re throwing Halloween parties. You’re on [Habitat for Humanity] builds.”
Jonathan said there’s “nothing like” working on a Habitat build in person, as he’s able to “see complete strangers working side by side, people from the local community.”
“Habitat is not just gifting houses. Habitat is working alongside homeowners to build their own home, and then those same homeowners pitch in to build their neighbor’s home and the whole community,” he continued. “So this is a remarkable organization that really stretches those dollars around. But for the build site, when you walk on here, you don’t have to have any experience at all. You can just show up and there’s something for everybody to do.”
With Jonathan’s passion for Habitat, it’s no surprise that he’s a little too busy to plan his nuptials with Deschanel, 45. The couple got engaged in August 2023 after four years of dating.
“Forever starts now!!!” the New Girl alum captioned an Instagram selfie at the time, showing fans her sparkling engagement ring.
Despite being engaged for more than two years now, wedding planning has been on the back burner for the couple. Jonathan explained to People in August that instead, they’ve “been having so much fun traveling with the kids and filming this show and stuff,” referring to Deschanel’s two kids from a previous relationship and Jonathan’s HGTV show with Drew, Property Brothers.
Jonathan told the outlet that he has one condition for the wedding.
“Whatever we do, it has to be meaningful to us, and we want to gather our friends and family and have a good time,” he said. “We want to keep it very, very intimate.”
Jonathan and Deschanel also know they want to have a blowout bash when they finally tie the knot.
“The ceremony and the pomp and circumstance, we’ll get that out of the way, and then it’s the reception,” he exclusively told Us in June 2024. “It’s going to be a blast.”
In November 2024, Jonathan joked that he was “sick and tired of myself” for not “figuring out” their wedding date yet.
“We haven’t had any progress,” he exclusively told Us. “We’ve just been having a ton of fun.”
Drew jokingly lamented that the couple’s lack of planning is also affecting his schedule.
“My schedule is tied to his schedule,” he said. “I can’t plan vacations. I can’t do anything.”
Jonathan explained, “We got engaged, not this August, but [the] previous August. We’ve assumed maybe it would be this year or something. But the first text I got was from Drew saying, ‘Alright, I’m going to need to get the dates because this isn’t convenient for me.’”
Jonathan also previously told Us that his dynamic with Deschanel will likely remain the same after they say “I do.”
“I already play that role,” he said. “I mean, we’ve both been married before, but even when we were younger, you’re looking for different things, and who knows what we were looking for at that time?”
Jonathan was previously married to Kelsy Ully from 2007 to 2013. Meanwhile, Deschanel was married to Jacob Pechenik, with whom she shares daughter Elsie, 10, and son Charlie, 8. She was also previously married to Ben Gibbard from 2009 to 2012.
“When we met, it was amazing because we both had been through unsuccessful relationships,” Jonathan added. “You learn what you do not want, and you also think of the things that you do want — and the synergy was incredible. Instantly, we hit it off. Still to this day, we have these nerdy, cute moments where we’re just like, ‘Wow, how did it take so long for this to happen?’”
