Jonathan Bennett has learned a thing or two during his marriage to Jaymes Vaughan.

The Groomsmen star, 43, opened up to PEOPLE at the Dance Party to End ALZ: The Halloween Edition at AVALON in Los Angeles on Oct. 27 about the lessons he learned since tying the knot to Vaughan in March 2022.

“I’ve learned to always put the toilet seat down because we both like to sit down when we pee and that’s too much information,” he said. “That’s true.”

On a more serious note, he added, “I’ve also learned that you can just always be unapologetically yourself with the person that loves you.”

Bennett was joined by Melissa Peterman, lead judge of Hallmark’s Finding Mr. Christmas competition, which he hosts, who added of his relationship with Vaughan: “I’ll tell you what works. As someone who has watched them together, they are both rooting for each other.”

“And I think that is the key to anyone is that they both root for each other and they both feel lucky to be with that person,” she continued.

Bennett and Vaughan first met in October 2016 on the news program Celebrity Page when TV host interviewed the Mean Girls star. Bennett recalled in a 2021 interview with The Knot that when he first saw Vaughan, he thought he was “the most beautiful man” he’d seen and immediately ran to the bathroom to fix his hair.

“I came out of the bathroom and his producer Jade was standing in front of me,” he shared. “I asked her this exact question: ‘Am I about to meet my future husband?’ And she said, ‘I think so.’ “

However, Vaughan recalled feeling “electricity” with his now-husband when they took a photo together. He said, “I love how he says it was love at first sight for him. For me, I was just ready to do my interview, get it done and get on with the day.”

The pair went on to get engaged in November 2020 and before tying the knot in March 2022 surrounded by family and friends in Mexico, in what Bennett described to PEOPLE as a “dream wedding.”

“We kept having to stop and remind ourselves that we weren’t on a movie set, but this was actually our real life,” he shared at the time. “If you had told me this was one of my Hallmark movie sets, I would have believed it. It was that perfect.”
