Jimmy Fallon recalls cracking open a cold one with his favorite Saturday Night Live cast member — albeit in an unconventional way.
The Tonight Show host appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday, Oct. 29, and spoke on his admiration for the late John Belushi, who was one of seven cast members in SNL’s first season. Known for his energetic performances and sketches, Belushi died in 1982, when Fallon was seven years old.
Fallon said he “loved Belushi’s energy” and that he could also sing. He claimed that if they were the same age and had the chance to be friends, “we would have been in trouble.”
While filming the 2005 film Fever Pitch with Drew Barrymore in Martha’s Vineyard, Fallon recalled realizing Belushi’s grave wasn’t too far away. When he asked the movie’s directors about it, they offered to take him there. Though he remembered it was around 10 p.m. local time, Fallon grabbed a six-pack and got in a car with Barrymore and the directors to take off to Belushi’s remote burial site.
Fallon noted that only he got out of the car to visit Belushi’s grave — Barrymore and the directors left him there and drove off. So, he said he cracked a beer, sat beside Belushi’s headstone and struck up a conversation with him in the dead of night.
“What did you say to Belushi?” Stern asked.

“I mean, that’s between me and John,” Fallon shared with a shrug, but maintained that he wanted Belushi to know SNL was still popular and a fan favorite. He then continued to gush over his hero, and highlighted that since there was no immediate way for him to get home, he stayed a while and just talked.
“I might go back, have another one,” Fallon said of his spiritual moment with the original SNL cast member. “It was great! One-sided, but you know.”
