Jimmy Carter‘s loved ones and fellow public figures are paying their respects to the former president.
Nearly two weeks after Carter passed away at the age of 100, President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden as well as President-Elect Donald Trump and Melania Trump, gathered at the Washington National Cathedral Jan. 9 for the funeral services.
Joining in the remembrances for the former president were fellow former U.S. leaders Barack Obama—who was without Michelle Obama—Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, along with their wives Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush.
In fact, for the first time since 2018, all five living presidents—Biden, Trump, Obama, Clinton and Bush—are together under one roof. The last time they formed a united front was at George H. W. Bush‘s Dec. 2018 funeral.
Other attendees at Carter’s service included King Charles III‘s brother, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, who arrived from overseas to attend the ceremony and was seated by Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Carter, the 39th president of the United States, died on Dec. 29, the Carter Center announced in a statement, noting he passed away peacefully at his home Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family. Following the funeral services in Washington, D.C., Carter’s body will be flown to Georgia, where he will be laid to rest alongside his late wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who died in Nov. 2023 at the age of 96.
