Jennie Garth’s late Beverly Hills, 90210 cast members Luke Perry and Shannen Doherty are always on her mind.
Garth, 52, opened up about her time on the show and her bond with her castmates on the March 26 episode of Two Jersey Js, hosted by Real Housewives of New Jersey alumni Jackie Goldschneider and Jennifer Fessler.
In the episode, Garth spoke about how close she is to her costars, who will be reuniting at 90s Con in Connecticut this weekend. Then Fessler said, “We should also tell you, also, how sorry we are you’ve lost two of your castmates.” She said the “whole world” mourned their losses. Doherty died in July 2024 at the age of 53 after years of living with cancer. Perry died in 2019 at age 52 after a massive stroke.
“You seem to have been such a tight-knit group and for years and way too young for two of you, unfortunately, to not be with us anymore,” Fessler said.
“It doesn’t make sense,” Garth said. “It still doesn’t make sense to my brain.”
She continued, “I live in a world where they still are alive in my mind, so it’s very hard to understand that they’re not here physically.”
On 90210, Garth played Kelly Taylor, who began as the school’s most popular girl. Over time, she became a fan favorite and proved to be much more complicated. Doherty played Brenda Walsh, the twin of Jason Priestley’s Brandon Walsh. The series began with the siblings moving to Beverly Hills and being shocked at the culture. Perry played Dylan McKay, who eventually fell for Brenda.
Back in July, Garth opened up to PEOPLE about the bond her cast had in the wake of Doherty’s death. The Me by Jennie Garth creator said that since the cast had known each other since they “were all so young, it’s a connection that it’s really hard to explain.”
“People don’t, I think, fully understand it when you experience life-changing events like that for so long together during your formative years, you have a connection that can never ever be broken by an argument, or a death, or opinion,” she explained.
“No matter what, there’s that connection there, and it will be there for the rest of each of our lives and beyond,” Garth said. “I think just really honoring that connection, and we have been supportive.”
On the Two Jersey Js podcast, Garth also opened up about how hard it was to adjust to the fame her role on the show brought. The What I Like About You star was 17 when she landed her part. When the show broke out in season 2, which aired from 1991 to 1992, Garth said, “I sort of went into this weird, like, I can’t leave the house mode. Like, agoraphobia.”
“I can’t even think of anything else to describe it as, but, like, the Beatles,” she said. “It felt like that because there were just always people coming at us in throngs, and, that made me want to stay home a lot.” She had “complete shell shock” and felt “way out of my comfort zone.”
