Jenna Bush Hager opened up about her motherâs hilarious reaction to the birth of the TV personalityâs first child, Margaret Laura âMilaâ Hager, who was also the familyâs first grandchild.
The 44-year-old shared on Thursdayâs episode of Jenna & Friends that when Mila was born in 2013, Jennaâs mom, former First Lady Laura Bush, didnât quite understand how to pronounce her granddaughterâs name due to her Texan upbringing.
â[After the birth], my mom called, and sheâs like, âNow in Texas, theyâre calling her My-la. The way you spelled it, M-I-L-A, theyâre saying Myla.â
âWhat did she want you to do about that?â asked Jennaâs guest co-host, Scarlett Johansson. âSheâs like, âYou know Lela is L-E-L-A, maybe you change it to Mela,â the mom of three replied.

âI was like, you want me to change the spelling of my childâs name because in Texas theyâre mispronouncing her name as Myla?â Jenna laughed.
âDo you think that would be helpful?â Scarlett quipped, adding: âI havenât seen that spelling.â
The Today show star noted that Mila was not as popular of a name when her daughter was born as it was now, and shared her hopes that Texans had learned the correct pronunciation.
Mila was named after her two grandmothers, including Laura Bush, while Jennaâs middle child, Poppy, 10, is named after her grandfather, former President George W. Bush, who used to go by âPoppyâ in childhood.
Her seven-year-old son, Henry âHalâ Hager, is named after his father and Jennaâs husband of 17 years, Henry Hager. George announced Milaâs arrival via a Facebook post in 2013. âLaura and I are thrilled to announce the birth of our grandchild, Margaret Laura âMilaâ Hager,â he wrote. âMila, daughter of Jenna and Henry Hager, is named for her grandmothers.â
The author revealed on Tuesdayâs episode of Today that she wanted to drop âBushâ from her name when she first started her teaching career in Washington, D.C. in the early â00s. âI went by Ms. Jenna âcause I didnât really want them to know [who I was], although, of course, they knew,â she admitted on the show. âAnd so, I was, like, ready to go by Hager.â
âBut then, I started at the Today show, and they were like, âYou wrote a book under Jenna Bush.â And I was like, âAlright, whatever.â They were like, âPeople may not know who you are,â which is so stupid because Iâve been here for 15 years. Anyway, I did both, and Iâm fine with it. I actually like having both.â
Jenna started working with the Today team as a correspondent in August 2009, and took over the hosting duties of the showâs fourth hour when Kathie Lee Gifford left in April 2019.
She previously opened up about being a ânepo babyâ after growing up in the public eye. âI think itâs hard. People want [nepo babies] to fail,â Jenna said on the show. â[My twin] Barbara and I are serious workaholics, and Iâve tried to figure out why, and I think itâs because we want to prove to people that it isnât always easy.â
âIâm glad I work really hard, and Iâm glad I have the family that I have. But I also need to, at some point, be like, âOkay, I did it. I proved it.â And I can also be happy with my kids at home. I think itâs a double-edged sword.â
