Jelly Roll is showing off his new, unexpected style!
The Grammy-nominated musician recently partnered with Zevia for a new commercial — and sported a wardrobe fans may not expect: a pair of Daisy Dukes!
On Monday, March 10, the beverage drink’s new ad dropped and featured Jelly Roll poking fun at commonly seen commercials.
The commercial begins with the musician arriving in a bright red pickup truck at a rest stop that features a gas station, motel and diner. As he gets out of the car, two young boys nearby watch him — in his Daisy Dukes and cut-off flannel — run his hands through his mullet.
As the boys look at him in amazement and the melody of Linda Lyndell’s “Whatta Man” plays, the singer heads to the Zevia refrigerator and grabs a Creamy Root Beer can.
One of the boys then says, “Jelly Roll in a Zevia commercial? This is huge. By choosing him as a spokesperson for their zero-sugar soda with zero artificial ingredients Zevia is dismantling the notion that ‘real men’ cannot be conscious of what goes into their bodies. Mr. Roll, now, quite literally is the poster child for sweet authenticity.”
“What?” the other young boy asks his friend in astonishment.
The commercial then cuts to Jelly Roll smiling directly at the camera with his bottle of Creamy Root Beer.
The musician, who revealed his favorite flavor is Creamy Root Beer, told PEOPLE that his personal experience motivated him to help deliver the message that men should be mindful of what they eat and drink.
“I think being honest about that choice and the ongoing commitment (and slip-ups) has helped people feel like they aren’t alone if they are going through something similar and that’s why I wanted to be honest with my health journey,” he explained.
He also noted that he came to the decision to commit to this way of life this past year. He attributes it to “partly age and partly just being where I am in my life,” including “being on the road [and] the schedule demands.”
“Looking at my family and knowing I want to be here as long as possible that I really had to make a choice and constant decision to keep up that choice when it came to what I end up consuming-physically and mentally,” he said.
“Finding options that help me keep that going was important to me, and making sure you evaluate what is in the stuff you’re consuming has been a game changer for me,” he revealed.
As for participating in this ad, the American Idol judge joked that Daisy Dukes are now a staple in his wardrobe. “When we got the concept for the Zevia spot, we were like, ‘Okay, for this to be right, we need to go all in.’”
“It’s funny we did a fitting for it while we were in between breaks for filming American Idol, so I think some of the contestants may have thought, ‘What kind of theme episode is coming if Jelly is rocking that look?’”
