Jay-Z has spoken candidly about daughter Blue Ivy’s rise in the spotlight, shutting down ‘nepo baby’ criticism and insisting her success has been earned through hard work and determination.

In a revealing new interview with GQ, the rapper opened up about watching his eldest child evolve from tentative performer to confident stage presence during Beyoncé’s blockbuster tour, describing a turning point that changed everything.

Reflecting on Blue Ivy’s early performances, Jay-Z admitted that while she had prepared, something was initially holding her back.

“On the first tour there was a lot of conversation around her first performance, and she worked really hard to get to that point, but she still wasn’t going for it. She still was going through the motions,” he said.

What followed, however, was a shift he says he will never forget. “And then she just started fighting back. I saw her fight maybe for the first time in her life – like, not everything is just given to her and everything is easy. She fought for it.”

That transformation didn’t go unnoticed at home either, with Jay-Z revealing just how eager Blue Ivy has become to perform.

“She’s almost on every number. I had to take her off some, like, ‘Man, you can’t be on that stage when [Beyoncé’s] singing “Six-inch heels…”; are you crazy?’” he joked.

Her enthusiasm, he added, has only grown stronger with time. “I don’t think we’re going to be able to get her off that stage now.”

While Blue Ivy’s dance skills have captured global attention, Jay-Z also shared a lesser-known side of her creativity – her musical ear.

Describing her as “a crazy pianist,” he revealed she has an instinctive ability that can’t be taught. “But she has perfect pitch. If she hears a song, she’ll be like, ‘Play it again,’ and then she’ll teach herself. That’s just talent, she doesn’t work at that,” he said.

Despite her clear ability, Blue Ivy is determined to keep her passion on her own terms. “She won’t let us get her a teacher because she doesn’t want it to be a job.”

Addressing the ongoing ‘nepo baby’ narrative, Jay-Z made it clear that while Blue Ivy may have grown up in an extraordinary environment, her achievements are far from handed to her.

“She worked at this, and it makes me proud that she fought for something that she really wanted to do.”

In earlier interviews, Jay-Z reflected on how proud he was seeing Blue take the stage with Beyoncé because he recalls that she was feeling extremely anxious beforehand.

After seeing her confidently perform onstage at the Renaissance Tour, he expressed: “I know her, so I know how nervous she was. I know how frightened she was. What makes me super proud and, like, I still get goosebumps [is] just seeing her walk on stage – just because Blue’s been born into this world that she didn’t ask [for]. She’s been born into a life she didn’t ask for,” per the special, Jay-Z & Gayle King: Brooklyn’s Own.
