By the time the Freaky Friday sequel, Freakier Friday, arrives in theaters in August 2025, 22 years will have passed since the remakeâs premiere.
Jamie Lee Curtis, 66, explained why fans have had to wait more than two decades for the sequel during an appearance on TODAY on Thursday, Dec. 12, while promoting her films The Last Showgirl and The Sticky.
âWe couldnât have made this movie until now, because Lindsay [Lohan] had to be old enough to have a 15 year old,â Curtis emphasized.
In Freakier Friday, Anna Coleman (Lohan, 38) will play a mother to her own daughter and soon-to-be step daughter.
âShe has a 15 year old, so Iâm now a grandma,â Curtis said.
Curtis hinted that the film will be filled with the ânostalgiaâ that longtime Freaky Friday fans are hoping to see in the sequel.
âAnd it checks every box that you would want,â Curtis said. âIt has the nostalgia of the original movie with Pink Slip and Chad Michael Murray.â
Murray, 43, played Annaâs crush Jake in the 2003 film.Â
âBoy, do women love Chad Michael Murray!â Curtis exclaimed. âAnd it has some new elements with it.â
Actors bringing new characters to life in the sequel include Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Manny Jacinto, according to Variety.
Jacinto is cast to play Lohanâs husband in the sequel. âManny is lovely, so funny,â Lohan told Entertainment Weekly.
The film also has a new director, Nisha Ganatra, who isnât a stranger to Disney. She previously worked on Huluâs Welcome to Chippendales.
Curtis and Lohan announced the filming of the sequel at Walt Disney Studios was well underway in a a June 24 Instagram post, with the mother-daughter duo were pictured holding hands onset.Â
The plot will be centered on Lohan and Curtisâ characters switching bodies with two teenage girls for an even Freakier Friday, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Freakier Friday is set to premiere in theaters Aug. 8, 2025.
