James Van Der Beek and his wife renewed their vows just two days before the actor died of cancer.
âOur friends got us new rings, filled our bedroom with flowers and candles and we renewed our vows from bed,â Kimberly Van Der Beek told People in an interview published Tuesday.
The former film producer described the ceremony as âsimple and beautiful and moving,â explaining that their pal PoranguĂ, a multi-instrumentalist, played the âmost beautiful music.â
PoranguĂ closed out the ceremony with âSomewhere Over the Rainbow.â
According to the outlet, a few of the coupleâs close friends attended the renewal while others joined in remotely over Zoom.
The âDawsonâs Creekâ alum and Kimberly tied the knot on Aug. 1, 2010. They welcomed six children together.
James, who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in August 2023, died on Feb. 11 at the age of 48.
âHe met his final days with courage, faith and grace,â Kimberly, 44, announced via Instagram. âThere is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come.â
The actorâs family set up a GoFundMe after his medical treatments âleft [his] family out of funds.â

James â who had a net worth of $3 million â resorted to selling autographed merchandise from his past projects to help with finances ahead of his death.
The âRules of Attractionâ star was mourned by several of his co-stars throughout the years, including Katie Holmes.
âI formed some words with a heavy heart,â the actress, who starred with James in âDawsonâs Creekâ from 1998 to 2003, wrote on Instagram. âI am so grateful to have shared in a piece of Jamesâ journey. He is beloved.â
James was reportedly working on a memoir before he died, though itâs unclear how far he got with the project, or if itâll be released.
The âVarsity Bluesâ starâs final projects included the forthcoming âLegally Blondeâ prequel series âElleâ and the 2025 show âOvercompensating.â
