Jada Pinkett Smith is making her big comeback!
The actress, 54, shared on social media that sheâll be appearing in her first project in four years, reprising her breakthrough role â Lena James in A Different World.
A Different World returns
The sitcom first began airing back in 1987, a spin-off of The Cosby Show. And just like its predecessor, it was a ratings success, airing 144 episodes over the course of six seasons, ending in 1993.
While it initially centered around Lisa Bonetâs Denise Huxtable, it eventually pivoted to Jasmine Guyâs Whitley Gilbert-Wayne and Kadeem Hardisonâs Dwayne Cleofis Wayne. Jada joined the show in its fifth season as Lena, becoming a part of its main cast until its conclusion.
Jadaâs big comeback
Now, 35 years after she first joined the show, the star will return in her role, which she announced on Instagram with a photo outside her trailer, which bore her characterâs name and the showâs logo. âShe back,â she simply wrote beside it.
Fans reacted with excitement for her comeback, leaving comments like: âYessssss Miss Lena James class of 1995! IKDR!â and: âMillennials HAVE WON,â as well as: âPlease let it be more than a cameo. Full role, por favor.â Jadaâs full role with the reboot is currently unclear.
This is her first acting role since her appearance in a 2022 episode of The Equalizer (in 2023, she served as executive producer and narrator for the docuseries African Queens).
Rebooted and reprised
The idea of a reboot was originally floated around in 2012 by one of the showâs former head honchos, Debbie Allen. The cast reunited in 2024 to celebrate the showâs legacy. Later that year, talks began at Netflix for a revival, which was picked up for a pilot in March of 2025 and then a full series order that November.
Tony winner Maleah Joi Moon, best known for her turn in the Broadway show Hellâs Kitchen, will star in the reboot as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Whitley and Dwayne, who finds herself back in her parentsâ own HBCU, Hillman College.
An official logline for the series reads: â[The reboot] follows Deborah as she enters her freshman year at her parentsâ HBCU alma mater and finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape. She sets out to build her own legacy â while having the time of her life â alongside a whole new generation of Hillmanâs best and brightest.â
Other members of the cast so far include Alijah Kai as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, and Kennedi Reece as Hazel. It was also confirmed that Jasmine and Kadeem will reprise their roles.
Debbie will return as an executive producer and direct the seriesâ first three episodes, with Felicia Pride serving as showrunner, writer and an EP as well. Felicia told Variety: âIt is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life.â
âI am so proud of the work weâre doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.â
