A seven-nation army came for Jack White.
After the White Stripesâ lead singer suggested that writing about âpublicly aired breakupsâ like Taylor Swift was âboring,â he was forced to clarify his comments on Monday.
Taking to his Instagram Stories, per Rolling Stone, White said, âWhat I was trying to say in an interview I did about poetry and lyric writing, was that I donât find it interesting at all for ME to write about MYSELF in my own lyric writing and poetry because I think that it could be repetitive for ME to always write about and It could be uninteresting for people who listen to my music to delve into, and that imaginary characters are more attractive to me as a writer.â
The 50-year-old went on to praise Swiftâs âtremendous success,â as well as the other songwriters who have their own unique songwriting process.
âBecause I say I have a way of doing things doesnât mean that I think that EVERYONE should do it the same way,â White continued. âThey should do what works for them, And they do, and it is obviously appealing to many people, and Iâm glad to hear that.â
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee pointed out that he has been âmade less and less interested in doing interviewsâ amid the âage of this massive demand for click bait and content.â
He claimed in part that any âscrape of anything interestingâ will be used for dramatics and âspit out as bait.â
Whiteâs Instagram statement comes just one day after his interview with The Guardian went viral.
When asked if any of his songs were âautobiographical,â he responded, âNot too much. Now itâs become very popular in the Taylor Swift way of pop singers writing about all of their publicly aired breakups, which I donât find interesting at all. I think itâs a little bit boring for me to write about myself.â
The six-time Grammy winner further told the outlet that, even if he has had an âinteresting day,â heâs âalready lived thatâ and doesnât feel the need to rehash it in a song.
âIf itâs something really painful, Iâm not going to put this important, painful thing that I went through out there for some idiot on the internet to stomp all over,â he continued. âSo I put a percentage of that into what I do and then morph it into somebody elseâs character. I canât really learn about myself until I put it into somebody elseâs shoes.â
Meanwhile, this kind of songwriting has paid off for Swift, 36, who is set to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame later this year. She will be the youngest woman to be inducted.
In 2024, the hitmaker opened up about her 11th studio album, âThe Tortured Poets Department,â in which she gushed over being able to create from her own pain.
ââTortured Poetsâ is an album â I think more than any of my albums that Iâve ever made â I needed to make it. It was really a lifeline for me,â she told the crowd during a Melbourne Eras Tour stop in February 2024, via NME.
âJust the things I was going through and the things I was writing about. It kind of reminded me of why songwriting is something that actually gets me through my life, and I never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on âTortured Poets.ââ
