A few hours before Isabella Rossellini stepped on the 2025 SAG Awards stage with her Conclave castmates to accept the trophy for best ensemble, the iconic actress had already nearly stolen the show when she stepped on the red carpet.
Rossellini wore a Âľ-sleeve black dress which she accessorized with a multi-strand necklace and drop earrings. But all eyes were on her million-dollar smile and healthy glow.
The Lancôme global ambassador’s makeup look was the work of Matin Maulawizada, who tells PEOPLE that he’s collaborated with Rossellini for “quite some time” and had fallen in love with her work long before that.
“[1986’s] Blue Velvet was the first time I really [became] obsessed with her,” Maulawizada recalls. After learning of her beauty and modeling work (Rossellini became the face of Lancôme in 1982), Maulawizada says she became “the first famous model I knew by name.”
Fast-forward nearly 40 years, and the two, with hairstylist Peter Butler, were together in a Los Angeles hotel getting Rossellini ready to attend her very first SAG Awards.

Of the inspiration behind the makeup look, Maulawizada shares “she was wearing a beautiful lace black dress with incredible pearls and pearl heirloom earrings. [When] I saw the outfit the afternoon [of the event] it reminded me of classic 50s dresses that people wore with a thick black liner and red lips. I wanted to balance it with a soft smokey lash line and dark plum lips — a modern twist.”
It’s no surprise Maulawizada went for a powerful lip color, Rossellini’s lips are his favorite feature to play up (but that’s only if he’s forced to choose as every feature is equally stunning).
“She is one of the few women that can fearlessly put on unusual colors on her lips,” Maulawizada says, adding, “After all, she has lipstick named after her!”
The pro did not apply Mademoiselle Isabella on her lips this evening. Instead, he reached for a power-duo that we’ll get to momentarily.

Beginning with Rossellini’s skin, Maulawizada explains, “I love to prepare [it] well before applying any makeup. Usually, clients come to these events traveling for hours and it’s very important to spend a little time massaging and hydrating their skin. I sprayed a generous amount of the LancĂ´me Absolue L’Extrait Elixir Lotion first, then applied the Cream and Eye Treatment in the same collection.”Â
For her complexion, Maulawizada opted for LancĂ´me Teint Idole Ultra Wear Care & Glow Serum Foundation and Care & Glow Serum Concealer.Â
“Since the focal point was the smokey lash line, I used Lancôme Lash Idole Flutter Extension Lengthening Mascara and Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in 02 Noir Intense between the lashes to create a subtle but dark and intense lash line.”
And now, for her lips, the pro chose LancĂ´me Lip Idole Squalane-12 ButterGlow Hydrating Lip Balm in 60 Million-Dollar Berry on top of Lip Shaper in 66 Mahogany Mauve.Â
To really embody Rossellini, whose 1980s Trésor ads remain some of the most breathtaking campaigns of all time, finish with a spritz of the Eau de Parfum.
The pro says his star client “never looks at the mirror until we are done” but when she did, “she was delighted.”Â
Maulawizada looks forward to every opportunity to work with Rossellini, sharing “Isabella’s voice and her storytelling is always a treat to listen to.”
“I have always admired her not just for her beauty but also for her character and her personality,” he says.
And even though creating a makeup look for an icon for a major occasion can sound a little nerve wracking, Maulawizada says with Rossellini, it’s a dream.Â
“She is very intuitive about colors and textures and almost always we are instinctively synched about the look we are creating. With Isabella, it’s the most wonderful collaborative experience.”
