As the royals open up about their lifestyles, itâs the diet quirks and interesting indulgences of everyone from Princess Kate and Meghan Markle to King Charles and Prince William that always generate interest.
Everyone has their own personal food preferences â some of us canât bear spicy food while others adore it, and some people love sweet desserts but others crave a cheeseboard. Despite having the nationâs top chefs cater their daily meals, royals have their own preferred foods too â and also some rather bizarre eating habits!
From eating certain fruit with cutlery to unusual snack choices and even skipping a main meal, the regal lot are an interesting bunch at mealtimes. Find out more belowâŠ
Did you know that the royal family donât eat garlic? The late Queen Elizabeth is said to not like the taste and Camilla previously confirmed it was a âno-noâ during an appearance on MasterChef Australia, joking: âYou always have to lay off the garlic.â
Her Majesty was also not a big fan of carbs and is believed to have never eaten starchy food while dining alone â so pasta, potatoes and rice were off the menu.
The monarch has another slightly unusual food habit too â she eats her bananas with a knife and fork! She apparently slices the top and bottom off with a knife, before chopping the fruit into small pieces.
When it comes to snacks, Princess Kate is super healthy and it started in her early years. While visiting children at Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2018, she told a four-year-old patient: âI used to eat lots and lots of olives when I was little as well.â
It appears that young Princess Charlotte is emulating her motherâs healthy eating patterns, as Kate previously revealed that her daughter also snacks on olives!
Charlesâ unusual food habit isnât to do with what he eats but when he eats. The royal is said to skip lunch. Writing in The Telegraph, former royal correspondent Gordon Rayner previously revealed: âLunch is seen as a luxury that gets in the way of his work, so he eats a late breakfast and works through.
âI found this out the hard way, by going hungry when I started covering royal tours and watching enviously as his long-suffering staff produced snacks from pockets so they could eat on the go.â
The son of King Charles has an unusual eating habit when it comes to curry. William said in the past: âChicken masala, love that, a bit of flavour â Iâm not a vindaloo man put it that way.â
In fact, William loves chicken tikka masala so much that his former chef created a pizza with the topping! Former royal chef Darren McGrady has said: âI [made] pizza all the time for William. In my second cookbook, The Royal Chef at Home, thereâs a chicken tikka masala pizza [recipe] because he loves Indian food. The pizza combined the two.â
Whereas many of us eat cereal or toast for breakfast, Queen Camilla enjoys Scottish oatcakes. Clarence Houseâs official Instagram page recently shared the three-ingredient recipe which âare commonly eaten at breakfast or served up with a cheese board.â
They are said to be a mix between a cracker, biscuit and pancake, and can be served warm with banana or peanut butter for breakfast.
Camilla also has an unusual favourite snack â raw peas! On a school visit to Slough, England, Camilla told students: âI tell you what I really like â eating peas straight from the garden. If you take them straight from the pod they are delicious and really sweet.â
Meghan has an extremely healthy diet and likes to start her day with a green juice â and itâs also the only version of a takeaway she eats!
Speaking of her fast food choices, she told The Chalkboard: âA green juice. Thatâs fast. And itâs food.â She continued: âItâs been many moons since I went through a drive-thru.â
Out of all of the members of the royal family, itâs well-known that the Princess Royal has plenty of unusual habits when it comes to her diet. Â According to the MailOnline, Anne has never been one for decadence or indulgence when it comes to mealtimes and has even been known to serve her dinner guests pork pies or âanything by Fray Bentos,â a supermarket brand of tinned meat.
Itâs also been reported that the late Queenâs daughter often has a bizarre request for her bananas â preferring them to be out of date. Former royal chef Darren McGrady previously told TODAY: â[Princess Anne] almost always preferred the bananas almost black â overripe â because they digest easier.â
