Howie Mandel says he now regrets apologizing to Kelly Ripa after their awkward on-air exchange last week.
âI donât believe in apologizing but as I said in that post, which I kind of regret making, obviously I told a joke that didnât land well,â Mandel said of the encounter, during which he pushed back after Ripa and husband Mark Consuelos commented on his appearance.
âComedians always say, âIf you can make one person laugh, youâre doing the job, but apparently thatâs not enough. Itâs not enough,â he said during an interview on Tuesdayâs âHot Mics with Billy Bush.â
He added, âSo you liked my joke. Iâm reading and thereâs no stopping it and I donât understand and I tried to stop it. I tried to apologize. I agreed with people. I do.â
Mandel said he doesnât âknow whatâs going onâ or âwhen this will end,â referring to the backlash surrounding the intense exchange.
âAnd I hope it ends soon because I didnât mean to cause any disruption. I didnât mean to embarrass anybody,â he said.
On Wednesdayâs episode of Carrie Berkâs âFire Chats: The Mindfire Pod,â Mandel said he didnât âknow how [the apology was] received,â adding that âit doesnât matter.â
Reps for Ripa and Consuelos did not immediately return Page Sixâs requests for comment on Wednesday evening.
The drama started after Mandel seemingly had a negative reaction on last Mondayâs âLive with Kelly and Mark,â as the pair congratulated the âAmericaâs Got Talentâ judge on his milestone 70th birthday.
The duo complimented the actor on his appearance, to which he replied, âThat doesnât mean anything to me.â The longtime talk show host, 55, attempted to assure the comedian that they werenât âsaying you look great for 70.â
âWeâre saying you look great and I donât believe youâre 70,â Ripa clarified.
Mandel replied, âNo, no â itâs like saying youâre smart for a stupid person. âOh, you seem smart, you seem smart,â you see, no, I donât look good,â as the audience erupted in laughter.
Consuelos, 55, said Mandel does indeed âlook good,â with Mandel jokingly agreeing that heâs âgorgeous.â
In an Instagram video on Sunday, Mandel asserted that comedians shouldnât have to apologize for their jokes â but for Ripa, he made an exception.
âIt is a joke. It is meant as a joke, and itâs not meant to offend,â he said in the beachside video, noting that it had been âhardâ since heâs never apologized in his 50-year career in comedy.
âBut this is for Kelly Ripa, who in the past has been incredibly supportive,â he explained. âNot only have I been a guest on her show, but I have co-hosted with her and Iâve known her for years.â
He also said his jokes arenât always received well. âWhen I go out there I just try to be entertaining and funny, and sometimes as a comedian things donât land the way you mean them to land,â he divulged.
âNot only do I want to say Iâm sorry to Kelly â and this is the hardest part â youâre right,â he went on. âYouâre absolutely right, and Iâm sorry I didnât see it that way.â
Mandel concluded the video by quipping, âAnd after a lot of thought and self-reflection, I look great for my age. I really do. I look fantastic and I just have to embrace the fact that I look this good.â
âLive With Kelly and Markâ executive producer Michael Gelman then poked fun at the drama while commenting on Mandelâs post.
âDuring these divided times, one thing we can all agree upon is that you do look great ⊠for your age,â he quipped.
