After Quincy Jones offered his perspective on The Beatles, Paul McCartney had some thoughts.
A 2018 interview with the late music producer â who died on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 91 â for New York Magazine has resurfaced, which features his unfiltered opinion of the members of the legendary classic rock group.
In it, Jones said The Beatles were âno-playing motherfâers.â
âPaul was the worst bass player I ever heard. And Ringo [Starr]? Donât even talk about it,â he told the publication.
Jones continued: âI remember once we were in the studio with George Martin, and Ringo had taken three hours for a four-bar thing he was trying to fix on a song. He couldnât get it.â
The 28-time Grammy winner then revealed he came up with a plan.
âWe said, âMate, why donât you get some lager and lime, some shepherdâs pie, and take an hour-and-a-half and relax a little bit.â So, he did, and we called Ronnie Verrell, a jazz drummer. Ronnie came in for 15 minutes and tore it up,â Jones recalled.
He continued: âRingo comes back and says, âGeorge, can you play it back for me one more time?â George did, and Ringo says, âThat didnât sound so bad.â I said, âYeah, motherfâer, because it ainât you.â Great guy, though.â
McCartney, 82, took the opportunity to respond to Jonesâ comments in a 2018 interview with GQ.
âI love this guy. Heâs totally out of his tree. But the great thing was, he rang me after this. Iâd only heard about it, and Iâd thought, Iâm not sure if itâs true. The joke is, I love Quincy, even after this,â he told the publication.
McCartney also recalled the apology he received from Jones: ââPaul, I didnât really say that thing. I donât know what happened man, I never said that. You know I love you guys!â I said, âIf you had said that, you know what I would have said? Fâ you, Quincy Jones!â And he laughed. I said, âYou know I would say to that: Fâ you, Quincy Jones, you fâing crazy motherfâer!â So, actually, we just had a laugh.â
Added the âBlackbirdâ musician of Jones: âHeâs an old guy. I donât know what it was. But I donât think Iâm the worst bass player heâs ever heard. Or maybe heâs never heard bad bass players. Heâs talking all of this jazz and musicianship, and heâs an arranger and stuff.â
âThis is like Buddy Rich saying Ringo couldnât drum. Because, coming from Buddy Richâs sensibility, Ringo canât drum. But coming from our sensibility, Buddy Rich is a load of sâ. But God bless him,â McCartney concluded.
