Lucy Dacus is reflecting on the attention surrounding her romance with her Boygenius bandmate Julien Baker.
In a new cover story for Them from Monday, March 24, the “Please Stay” musician, 29, opened up about how she really feels about the public focusing on her relationship with the “Sprained Ankle” artist, 29.
“I don’t care,” Dacus told the publication. “That’s the thing. I actually don’t need to be understood about this because I understand. I have more confidence in our relationship than I have in myself.”
She added: “I feel like I need validation and I need other people to check my work, but I don’t need anyone to check my work on this.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Dacus recalled how the couple spent Valentine’s Day this year.
According to the “Ankles” singer, she and Baker did “really classic, romantic stuff,” like going to dinner.
At their home in Los Angeles, they spread rose petals on the floor, moved their furniture and danced together.
“So cliché,” said Dacus, “but also immediately a core memory.”
On Tuesday, March 18, the “Talk” performer confirmed her relationship with Baker to PEOPLE after months of speculation online. (The New Yorker first reported the news.)
“We are together,” said Dacus of their relationship, which she called “really sweet.” “People are right.”

She added: “It’s funny to just say it so plainly, because I feel like there’s all of this tension of people guessing, I don’t know, we just talked about it kind of recently, and we were like, ‘What is actually at risk for people knowing this?’ We wanted to be protective because it matters so much.”
“I hope to God people knowing won’t make it a less true or pleasant experience,” said Dacus. “So that’s one of the many precious things I’m giving up with this record. And she’s ready to be telling people, too. So, from us to you, we are in love.”
While the pair initially met in 2016, and have been friends for “over nine years,” their relationship began “percolating” through their indie-rock supergroup Boygenius.
