How Eric Dane will be honored in Euphoria’s new season two months after his death

Euphoria season three finally arrives after a nearly four year wait, putting some resolution (and potential conclusions?) to the storylines of Rue Bennett, Nate Jacobs, Cassie Howard, and more.

The HBO series, created by Sam Levinson, first premiered back in 2019, with a second season then dropping in 2022, and a third, likely final, installment coming today.

Eric Dane will still appear consistently as Cal Jacobs in season three of “Euphoria”

However, from the jump, this season of Euphoria is peppered with tragedy, especially due to the losses of producer Kevin Turen and star Angus Cloud, both in 2023, and then Eric Dane this February.

The latter passed away at the age of 53 on February 19, less than a year after going public with his battle with ALS. And the show will be honoring his memory, as well as the others we’ve lost in the lead-up to season three.

Honoring Eric, Angus, Kevin

Speaking at the season’s premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre on April 7, Sam told the crowd: “Some people ask why it took so long between seasons two and three. There were obvious factors — the strikes, trying to make a schedule work with our very in-demand cast, but the real time was in trying to figure out how to find a way to pay respect to those who we lost.”

He spoke specifically of his journey with Angus, and how he tried to help the young actor achieve sobriety. Angus died in July 2023 at the age of 2025 from an accidental overdose, with one of the discovered substances being fentanyl.

“You can’t be arrogant about existence,” Sam noted. “You’re forced to reckon with the fact that life itself is a wonder, a gift, a profound blessing.” He confirmed that the season will be dedicated “to those who we lost, Angus, Kevin, and Eric.” Kevin passed away at the age of 44 from acute cardiac dysfunction, with coronary artery disease as a contributing factor.

How Cal Jacobs shows up

Eric was able to film his scenes as Cal Jacobs, the father of Jacob Elordi’s Nate, prior to his death, but shared his ALS diagnosis with Sam early on. “When he showed up, I noticed that his speech was a little slurred,” Sam told Variety at the premiere.

“The real time was in trying to figure out how to find a way to pay respect to those who we lost,” Sam shared on the reason for the third season’s delay

“He was a bit self-conscious, and I said, ‘This works perfectly. We’re gonna put five beer bottles in front of you, and you’re about to say all of the [expletive] you would never say if you were sober.’ And we just had a blast shooting.”

He continued: “We had 28 cast members on Saturday for the wedding. There’s all these people around, and he just showed up with such grace and dignity. He’s a consummate professional all the way through, and I miss him.”
