Let’s go back, back to the beginning — and try to find the beat to Hilary Duff’s “Come Clean.”

The Younger actress and singer’s signature 2004 hit is currently soundtracking a major trend on TikTok, as some of the platform’s users attempt (and fail) to clap along to the pop song’s beat.

“Come Clean” has been used in over 17,000 videos on TikTok, and many of the latest ones find individuals challenging someone else to clap on the beat. The task proves difficult for many people, especially since the song’s verses are synth-heavy and don’t feature as identifiable of a drum pattern as the chorus.

A lot of the clips find people asking their significant others to clap along to the song, which they confidently try before either failing or second-guessing themselves.

“I love him so much I can’t take it sometimes,” wrote one TikTok user alongside a video of her boyfriend getting visibly frustrated by the challenge.

“This is the beat that feels right. Sorry guys,” wrote another creator, laughing as they attempted the task.

For some TikTok users, however, the challenge wasn’t exactly challenging. A few videos find individuals asking musicians to clap along with “Come Clean” — which they’re able to do without any struggle.

“Asking my husband to clap on beat but he doesn’t get the trend because he’s a musician,” wrote one social media user, captioning a clip of the man accomplishing the task with no problem.

Similarly, another person captioned a video, “POV: your husband is a drummer and can immediately find the beat.”

One TikTok user even conducted the music as if she was working with an orchestra. “I am watching. And I am judging,” she wrote. “You all are beginning to worry me.”

Duff is yet to respond to the trend, which isn’t the first on TikTok to center her music. A video of her performing the 2007 hit “With Love” with some low-energy choreography previously went viral, leading the former child star to recreate the clip in 2021.

“So I can stop receiving text about this…. also….. I tik toked….and it was a 12% kinda day,” wrote Duff alongside the video on Instagram.

Released as the second single from Duff’s 2003 album Metamorphosis, “Come Clean” reached No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became especially well-known as the theme song of MTV’s Laguna Beach.
