Upon its initial release in 2010, Heidi Montag Pratt’s Superficial album underperformed commercially and received mainly negative critical reviews. Currently, it’s No. 1 on iTunes — for a heartwarming reason.
After Heidi, 38, and husband Spencer Pratt’s Los Angeles home was destroyed in the Pacific Palisades wildfire on Jan. 8, the duo’s fans banded together to support the Hills alums by purchasing Superficial on iTunes, leading the album and its title track to reach No. 1 on the platform’s charts.
“Thank you for the overwhelming love and support of my music and really rallying behind us in this devastating time and making it such a blessing,” said Heidi in a recent TikTok video. “Thank you for helping support us, helping build us back up, helping to encourage us, give us that hope and faith and excitement in such a dark, dark time.”
Superficial was created during Heidi and Spencer’s time on The Hills, and they claimed to have spent nearly $2 million making the album independently with major pop songwriters and producers.
“Every detail was very important to me, because I take this very seriously. Most artists, it’s not their own money, but I’ve actually gone broke putting every dollar I’ve ever made and my heart and soul into this music,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2010.
The album failed to chart at the time, but many fans have long held a soft spot for Superficial, feeling the project was harshly judged due to Heidi and Spencer’s fame. Since its release, not only have some critics positively reevaluated the album, but its track “I’ll Do It” went viral on TikTok in 2023.
In celebration of the album’s 15th anniversary on Jan. 11, Heidi announced a deluxe version with extra songs and remixes via social media on Jan. 7 — one day before losing her home to the devastating wildfires.
“The one positive sign i saw as our house burned down was ours sons bed burned in the shape of a heart,” shared Spencer, 41, who shares sons Ryker, 2, and Gunner, 7, with Heidi. “A sign of how much love was in this house so thankful for all the years and memories there with our family.”
To support the couple, fans started a social media campaign to purchase Superficial and its tracks on iTunes, leading the album and its title track to reach No. 1, while “I’ll Do It” and new single “Go Harder” have also hit the charts.
“You guys really got Superficial to #1 on iTunes in multiple countries! I have no words for what you have done for me. My heart is so full,” wrote Heidi in an X post on Jan. 12.
Some celebrities have even joined in on the love for Heidi and Spencer. Tana Mongeau said Superficial was the soundtrack of her own evacuation, while Flavor Flav has shared multiple TikTok videos using “I’ll Do It.”
The Superficial resurgence is going strong, and it may not be over yet. In a TikTok video shared Jan. 13, Spencer revealed Pitbull may be hopping on a remix of “I’ll Do It” in the near future.
