A rocking start to the Super Bowl.
Green Day performed during the opening ceremony of Super Bowl LX that celebrated generations of Super Bowl MVPs including Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, and Peyton and Eli Manning.
The group, made up of Mike Dirnt, Billie Joe Armstrong and TrĂ© Coo, returned to its home state and took the stage at Leviâs Stadium in Santa Clarita, Calif. ahead of the big game.
Green Day kicked off the performance with âHoliday,â followed by âBoulevard of Broken Dreams and âAmerican Idiot.â
The group defied fansâ expectations and avoided making political statements in âHolidayâ and âAmerican Idiot,â despite their history of using their music to call out President Donald Trump and his policies.
Green Dayâs Super Bowl performance was announced by the NFL on Jan. 18.
âWe are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard,â Armstrong, 53, said in a press release. âWe are honored to welcome the MVPs whoâve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Letâs have fun! Letâs get loud!â
â Tim Tubito, NFLâs Director of Event Presentation & Content, said in the press release, âCelebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honoring the NFL Legends whoâve helped define this sport is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX.â
Donald Trump told The Post he was skipping the 2026 Super Bowl and called out Green Day and halftime performer Bad Bunny, who are outspoken critics of the president.
âIâm anti-them. I think itâs a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible,â Trump said last month.
But Trump, who went to the Super Bowl last year, clarified that the reason heâs missing the game this year is because âitâs just too far away.â
âI would go if, you know, it was a little bit shorter,â he added.
One week before Trumpâs remarks, Armstrong voiced support for anti-deportation protesters in Minnesota.
âIâm not a part of a redneck agenda. Iâm not a part of the MAGA agenda,â he said.
Months earlier, the Green Day frontman led an anti-Trump chant at the Rock Werchter festival on July 4, 2025.
âFâ Donald Trump,â Armstrong encouraged the crowd to yell in the middle of the bandâs performance of âHoliday.â He also tweaked the lyrics to âAmerican Idiot,â singing, âIâm not part of the MAGA agenda.â
Green Day formed in Rodeo, Calif. in 1987. The band has released 14 studio albums and won five Grammy Awards out of 19 nominations.
Their latest album, âSaviors,â came out over two years ago, on January 19, 2024.
The other Super Bowl 2026 performers include Charlie Puth, who is singing the national anthem, Brandi Carlile, who will perform âAmerica the Beautiful,â and Coco Jones, who will do âLife Every Voice and Sing.â
Bad Bunny, 31, is headlining the halftime show.
