George Clooney’s Broadway debut was a star-studded affair!
Clooney, 63, is starring as Edward R. Murrow in the stage adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck, which opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City on April 3, and PEOPLE spoke exclusively the actor’s famous friends and former costars on opening night.
“He’s been wanting to play Edward R. Murrow for so many years, that for him to actually fulfill his dream is pretty spectacular,” said Clooney’s close friend and former ER costar Anthony Edwards, 62. ”Super proud of him.”
Pierce Brosnan, 71, who walked the carpet with his wife, Keely Shaye Smith, also sang the Oscar-winner’s praises.
“I love the man. Love George. Really, love his movies, love … his style, the way he conducts himself. He’s got such class and he’s so gosh darn confident and so handsome,” Brosnan said.
Then, Brosnan jokingly added, “Now I’m getting annoyed.”
Smith, 61, chimed in, “Great philanthropist. Advocates for the underdogs.”
Clooney’s longtime friend, comedian Richard Kind, kept things short and sweet while describing the Oceans 11 star to PEOPLE.
“As much as [people] think he’s a great guy, he’s better,” Kind, 68, said.

Many famous faces were spotted at the Broadway event to show their support.
Jennifer Lopez, 55, walked the red carpet in full glam with her teen, Emme.
Rachel Maddow, Julianna Margulies, Jim Parsons, Gayle King and Cindy Crawford — who is married to Clooney’s Casamigos partner, Rande Gerber — were also in attendance, among many others.
The new stage production is an adaptation of the hit 2005 political drama of the same name about CBS news journalist Edward R. Murrow’s legendary 1954 exposé on Sen. Joseph McCarthy. Clooney and Grant Heslov adapted the film for the stage, and the play is directed by Tony winner David Cromer. The film version was directed by Clooney, who co-wrote the script with Heslov.
Tickets for Good Night, and Good Luck are now on sale. The play wraps up its limited run on June 8.
