People who are lactose intolerant may want to take a closer look at a popular grab in the snack aisle.

On Wednesday, March 26, Frito-Lay issued a recall on one of its products due to potential contamination.

In the press release, the chip company listed the recalled product as the 13 oz. bag of Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips. Due to the product potentially including nacho cheese tortilla chips, there may have been a light presence of what the filing called “undeclared milk.”

The announcement notes that contaminated products must have their “guaranteed fresh” date listed as May 20, 2025, as well as have a manufacturing code where the two last digits of the following numbers are anywhere between 30 and 55. These codes include: 471106504 18 13:xx, 471106505 85 13:xx, 471106506 85 13:xx, and 471106507 85 13:xx.

The 1,300 bags related to this recall were sent to 13 states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

A representative for Frito-Lay told PEOPLE, “Food safety is our highest priority. We have rigorous processes in place and we take any internal or external report about the quality of our products very seriously.”

The statement added, “We understand the risk that an undeclared allergen could pose to consumers and act quickly to alert the FDA, retailers and consumers. It’s important to note, that for those who do not have a dairy allergy, these products are safe to consume. ”

Consumers would have been able to purchase the product as early as March 7. Frito-Lay encourages consumers who may have already bought the product and are sensitive or allergic to dairy to not consume this product.

Although the company maintains that “this product is safe to consume,” excluding the aforementioned outliers, consumers are still encouraged to immediately dispose of any remaining product. Though the company initiated its own recall, the brand maintains that it informed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the situation.

While this was a voluntary recall by Frito-Lay, the FDA may still list it in an upcoming Enforcement Report, which will give the contamination level a specific classification risk.

This is not the first time the company has recalled a product for this particular matter. In December, Frito-Lay issued a recall for over 6,000 bags of 13 oz. bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips. On Jan. 27, the FDA classified the contamination risk as a Class 1 risk, defined by the organization as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Only three months into 2025, Frito-Lay is just one of the many brands that have initiated recalls. The growing list includes dark chocolate products from Cal Yee Farms, baked goods from one of Dunkin’s vendors, a cheese from Aldi and Coca-Cola soda packs.
