Freddie Prinze Jr. is celebrating a major milestone today as the beloved actor turns 50. Best known for his string of iconic teen films in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Freddie quickly became one of Hollywoodâs most recognisable young stars â and one of the eraâs biggest heartthrobs.
Early days
Born on March 8, 1976 in Los Angeles, Freddie is the son of late comedian Freddie Prinze, who famously starred in the hit sitcom Chico and the Man before his tragic death in 1977 when Freddie Jr. was just a baby.
Raised by his mother, Katherine Cochran, Freddie grew up largely out of the spotlight before deciding to follow in his fatherâs footsteps. After studying acting, he began landing small television roles in the mid-1990s, including appearances on shows like Family Matters and Step by Step.
Big break
His big break came in 1997 when he starred opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe in the teen horror hit I Know What You Did Last Summer. The film was a box-office success and helped launch Freddie into the spotlight.
But it was his leading role in the beloved 1999 romantic comedy Sheâs All That that cemented his status as a teen idol. Playing high school heartthrob Zack Siler, Freddie starred opposite Rachael Leigh Cook in a film that became one of the defining rom-coms of the decade.
He went on to appear in several other popular films including Summer Catch, Head Over Heels and the live-action Scooby-Doo movies, where he played the ever-clean-cut Fred.
Preferring a quiet life, he has an interesting way of avoiding paparazzi, telling the Oldish podcast: âThereâs times where [paparazzi] wait at the bottom of our street, but thereâs people that are way more famous than me on my street,â he said. âSo Iâll just make sure they leave first. Theyâll go follow Schwarzenegger and leave me alone. You know what I mean?â
Marriage and babies
It was on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer that Freddie met the woman who would become his wife: Sarah Michelle Gellar. The couple married in 2002 and have since become one of Hollywoodâs most enduring relationships.
Together they share two children and have largely chosen to keep their family life private, focusing on raising their kids away from the intense spotlight of Hollywood fame.
âRelationships, whether theyâre marital or friendships â you have to put work into it. Theyâre not just a given. And you have to be always willing to devote that time and that attention,â Sarah told E! News.
While Freddie stepped back from leading-man film roles in the mid-2000s, he has remained active in the entertainment industry. Over the years he has worked extensively in voice acting â including roles in the Star Wars Rebels animated series â and even spent time working behind the scenes as a writer and producer.
Kitchen confidential
In recent years he has also embraced cooking, releasing a cookbook and often sharing his love of food and family life with fans.
Three decades after he first captured audiencesâ attention, Freddie Prinze Jr. remains a nostalgic favourite for many fans who grew up watching his films.
And as he celebrates his 50th birthday, itâs clear that the one-time teen idol has successfully evolved into a new chapter â one defined as much by family and creativity as by Hollywood fame.
