Rory Callum Sykes’ mom is detailing his final moments.
After the former child actor, who starred on the British television series Kiddy Kapers, died in the Los Angeles wildfires at age 32, his mother Shelley Sykes, shared her attempt to save her son.
“I noticed that my son’s cottage roof had some floaty debris and ash falling on his roof,” she explained in an interview with ABC News Australia. “I tried to put the flames out on his roof with the hose pipe and there was no water, so I kind of freaked out about that.”
She explained that she couldn’t get her son to evacuate his home—which was among three small houses on the family’s 17-acre Malibu property, in addition to their main residence—as he was born blind and with cerebral palsy, and had difficulty walking.
“Rory had locked the door and he wasn’t coming out because he’d got swollen feet and he needed the bathroom,” Shelley recalled. “He said, ‘Mom, just leave me, you go sort yourself out—I’m good.’”
