Even Lena Dunham is dressing her baby in hand-me-downs: ‘The clothes are cuter’

Lena Dunham is leaning into her new life as a mom, one vintage purchase at a time.

After recently welcoming her first baby with husband Luis Felber via surrogate, the “Famesick” author expounded on the joys of filling her daughter’s closet with pre-loved fashion on her Substack newsletter, “Good Thing Going.”

“There are a lot of selfish reasons to shop second (or third or fourth) hand for babies and kids – the clothes are cuter, less expensive, usually better quality. And if we can think back that far, we will remember that hand me downs are the entire ethos of childhood!” Dunham, 40, wrote.

“I have such enormously fond memories of sacks of cool ‘big kid clothes’ appearing from older cousins and family friends, and how nice it was to slide into someone’s pre-softened jeans.”

The “Girls” creator previously wrote about her “descent into vintage bb clothes madness” for Vogue, revealing that she’d been scouring resale sites for designer baby styles from the likes of Sonia Rykiel, Dior and John Paul Gaultier while eagerly awaiting her daughter’s birth.

Now, Dunham’s even found herself living vicariously through her little one while adding secondhand items to her shopping cart.

“As a kurve-kween (sorry, so sorry) who can rarely locate the bygone items I dream of in a size that will shimmy up over my hips, I am realizing so many dreams through shopping small,” she shared on Substack.

Dunham noted that buying vintage baby clothes is also “great for Mother Earth,” saving pieces that might’ve been discarded from winding up in landfills.

“Babies go through 6 to 7 clothing sizes in their first two years. Most of those pieces get retired while they still look new,” she wrote.

Dunham even created a “little trading club” with fellow parents in her circle so they could swap baby clothes — and made a spreadsheet to track everything, “like an absolute nut.”

“My label maker has seen more action in the last few months than in its whole sad life,” she quipped.
