Elizabeth Holmes’ unbelievable life explored in wake of shocking new documentary

Elizabeth was raised in Washington, D.C, by her U.S. government aid worker father, Christian Holmes IV, and her congressional committee staffer mother, Noel Daoust. She dropped out of Stanford University after claiming she was sexually assaulted and founded her health technology company, Theranos, in 2003. 

During the height of her legal woes in 2017, Elizabeth met hotel heir Billy Evans, 33. A year later, he proposed, and they married in secret sometime in 2019.

“Everyone tried to break us, but instead we forged an unbreakable bond,” Billy once told People. “She’s my best friend and soulmate. I believe in her in every way.”

Weeks before her fraud trial began, Elizabeth and Billy welcomed their son, William, in July 2021. Their daughter, Invicta, arrived in February 2023, just months before Elizabeth began her prison sentence.

Elizabeth raised hundreds of millions of dollars by claiming that Theranos’ technology “would utilize microfluidics to run hundreds of the most common blood tests using only a few drops of blood” to quickly detect conditions such as cancer and diabetes, a claim she reportedly knew was not true.

Her company was exposed by The Wall Street Journal in 2015 after Theranos employees Erika Cheung and Tyler Shultz claimed that other employees were tampering with statistical data and test results.

In 2018, Elizabeth was forced to give up control of the company she started when she was 19, and four years later, she was convicted in federal court on four counts of defrauding investors and sentenced to 11 years in prison. She maintains her innocence to this day.

A24’s new documentary about Elizabeth, titled You Can See Everything, was a top-secret project three years in the making. It was unveiled on Sunday, September 6, at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, but no one knew what they were about to watch until the screening began.

According to reports, attendees had their cell phones and electronic devices locked in pouches before being allowed into the packed theatre, where security personnel used night-vision goggles to ensure no one broke the rules.

Filmmakers Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim appeared on stage to address the crowd, with Nathan telling the audience: “I really am struggling to this day to understand exactly what I experienced in this. I don’t quite know what I went through.”

The documentary will be released in cinemas this October. The official film release reads: “Thirty-four days before she’s sent to prison, notorious Silicon Valley founder Elizabeth Holmes invites a skeptical film crew to document her every move. What begins as an intimate portrait of an enigmatic felon becomes a mind-bending three-year journey into the abyss.”

A teaser trailer was released on September 7, showing Nathan quizzing Elizabeth while staring deeply into her eyes, and the footage left fans “unsettled” and “uncomfortable.”

“I don’t have anything to deceive you on,” Elizabeth tells him. “Of course I’m not deceiving you. I’m engaging with you as a human being. Why would I deceive you? There’s no reason for me to do that.”

An unsure Nathan replies: “OK. Alright. OK, good chat,” before asking, “You’re being real right now?’ Maintaining eye contact, Elizabeth replies, “I’m always being real.”

Sharing their reactions online, one viewer wrote on Instagram: “Is Elizabeth Holmes gonna get nominated for Best Actress cause that was more unsettling than Pattinson as Chris Hansen.” Another said: “I’ve never been so uncomfortable in my life.”

Elizabeth is over three years into her prison sentence, serving her time at FPC Bryan in Texas. She was originally sentenced to 11 years, but that was reduced to nine years for good behavior. She is expected to be released on December 30, 2031, two years and eight months early.
