After nearly 30 years at the helm of Versace, Donatella Versace has officially stepped down as the brand’s creative director to become its global ambassador, marking the end of one of fashion’s most defining eras.
Donatella, 69, confirmed the news in an Instagram post on Thursday, March 12, announcing that Dario Vitale would be doing the honors and taking over to become its chief creative officer as of April 1, 2025.
The post read, “Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes. I want to thank my incredible design team and all the employees at Versace that I have had the privilege of working with for over three decades.”
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy,” the post continued. “He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity.”
“In my new role as Chief Brand Ambassador, I will remain Versace’s most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart,” the message, which was signed by Donatella, concluded.
The news comes after WWD previously reported that Vitale was set to leave his role as design director at Miu Miu at the end of January 2025.
Vitale said he’s “truly honored” to be taking on the role in a statement shared on the Versace Instagram Stories.
“The House of Versace has a unique heritage that has spanned decades and has shaped the history of fashion,” he added.
“I want to express my sincere thank you to Donatella for her trust in me, and for her tireless dedication to the extraordinary brand that Versace is today,” Vitale shared.
“It is a privilege to contribute to the future growth of Versace and its global impact through my vision, expertise and dedication,” he concluded.
Donatella’s departure comes amid significant changes at Capri Holdings, which acquired Versace in 2018 for $2.1 billion and has recently been exploring strategic shifts, including a potential sale of the brand.
Donatella took over Versace following the 1997 murder of her brother, Gianni Versace, and has since been instrumental in shaping the label’s identity in the modern era. Her tenure saw the brand expand its global reach while staying true to its signature bold, glamorous and unapologetically sexy aesthetic.
From iconic red carpet moments — like Jennifer Lopez’s unforgettable jungle-print dress at the 2000 Grammys — to reinvigorating the brand with star-studded campaigns and collaborations, Donatella’s influence has been undeniable. Over the past year, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sabrina Carpenter have all turned to her signature designs, cementing her status as a go-to for music’s biggest names.
She’s the most-followed fashion designer on social media, with over 12 million Instagram followers.
Her final appearance at Versace’s Milan Fashion Week show on Feb. 28 fueled speculation of her impending exit. The collection paid tribute to her brother, Gianni, referencing his last collection from autumn/winter 1997.
Donatella has long been the driving force behind Versace, remaining a hands-on designer throughout her tenure. However, the nostalgic nod to Gianni’s legacy was seen by many as a symbolic closing chapter for Donatella herself.
