After the death of Carl Dean, Dolly Partonâs husband of nearly 60 years, the country star is opening up about the mixed emotions sheâs experiencing.
On Friday, March 14, Parton surprised fans at the opening celebration for Dollywoodâs 40th season and sat down with Knox News afterward to discuss how sheâs doing.
âIâm doing better than I thought I would,â Parton, 79, said.
She added, âIâve been with him 60 years. So, Iâm going to have to relearn some of the things that weâve done. But Iâll keep him always close.â
The â9 to 5â singer also said that sheâs âat peace that heâs at peace.â However, that doesnât stop Parton from âmissing him and loving him.â
Dean âsuffered a great deal,â she said, before adding that itâs âa hole in my heart, you know, but weâll fill that up with good stuff and heâll still always be with me,â
Elsewhere in the conversation, Parton said that Dean â who always kept a low profile â would visit Dollywood often.
âHe used to come to the park; he bought his own ticket â stood in line and got his ticket. He didnât want somebody giving him a ticket âcause he was Dollyâs husband,â Parton recalled. âEverybody thinks thatâs the funniest thing.â
Dean would visit without Parton and indulge in the theme park food, per the outlet, and would often offer some feedback.
âHe would say, âYou need more bathrooms,ââ Parton laughed, imitating his voice. âOr he would say, âYou need to tell them this or that. Itâs crowded over in that area. You might want to tell them they ought to do this or that.ââ
âHe wasnât coming to criticize, but he would notice things and he would say, you might want to bring this to their attention,â she added.
Parton concluded by saying that she now plans to âdo like Carlâ and âjust walk around, look at everything.â
Partonâs visit to Dollywood marked her first public appearance since Dean died on Monday, March 3, at 82 years old. During her appearance, she addressed fans and thanked them for their flowers and cards while she had been mourning Dean.
âOf course I will always love him, and Iâll miss him, but I wanted you to know that I will always love you,â she told the audience, referring to her song âI Will Always Love You.â
Parton announced the death of Dean on March 3Â on Instagram. âCarl Dean, husband of Dolly Parton, passed away March 3rd in Nashville at the age of 82. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family attending. He is survived by his siblings Sandra and Donnie,â the post began.
âCarl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words canât do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy,â Parton â who recently released song âIf You Hadnât Been Thereâ about Dean â continued.
âThe family asks for privacy during this difficult time.â
