Study hard, kids — it may result in free doughnuts!

Following an increasingly popular trend on TikTok that suggests Krispy Kreme will give out free doughnuts if a student got A’s on their report card, PEOPLE reached out to the popular bakery chain to get to the truth. Krispy Kreme confirmed the the deal — which has been in effect for years.

It’s a national program, and Krispy Kreme reminds and encourages all its locations to take part to promote studiousness and good grades. The deal is one A on a report card, one free Original Glazed doughnut — and students can walk away with up to six.

Krispy Kreme tells PEOPLE that to claim the deal, the student must be in grades K-12, and be present at the store. Despite some claims on TikTok, the bakery brand also states that report cards must be for the current term — past report cards, as well as current progress reports and mid-term report cards, won’t be eligible for free doughnuts.

The trend is contained in the #KrispyKremeFreeDonutReportCard hashtag, which has garnered millions of views, and sees a wide range of users claiming their Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

The trend has proved attractive to parents looking to encourage their children academically — many kids are aware it’s important to do well in school, but the tangible, immediate reward of free doughnuts sweetens the pot a bit more.

Krispy Kreme has encouraged its report card program as early as 2011, Forbes reported, though it’s not an actual company policy. It’s more like a tradition, and it’s grounded in local stores rather than the larger company.
