Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly purchased a new summer home.
According to recent reports, the couple spent millions on a beachfront property located in Melides, Portugal ā a small town located 81 miles south of Lisbon. Harry, 40, likely got the recommendation for the Costa Terra Golf & Ocean Club from cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, who have been splitting their time between the U.K. and Melides since 2022.
The soon-to-be-built luxury golf resort spans 722-acres and features private villas, horseback riding, a wellness center and beach access to Portugalās Blue Coast.
The Duke and Duchess, 43, arenāt the only boldfaced names who have purchased property in the areat, which is dubbed the Hamptons of Portugal. Brazilian supermodel Gisele BĆ¼ndchen has a home in the area, and it has also been reported that George Clooney and Sharon Stone have invested in property on the same in which Harry and Meghanās new house is located.
Harry and Meghan cut ties with the royal family in 2020 and moved out of the U.K. in favor of an estate in Montecito, California. Their departure from their roles as senior royals created an issue of security for the couple, who no longer have the same protection provided to working royals like Prince William and Kate Middleton. However, Portugal is highly regarded as one of the safest places in Europe, which seems to make the country ideal for Harry, Meghan and their two kids Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3.
Royal expert Christoper Andersen ā who authored The King: The Life of Charles III ā weighed in on their āfascinatingā home purchase while chatting exclusively with Us Weekly. He noted that Eugenieās husband āworks for this community,ā which Andersen referred to as āa very posh areaā of Portugal.
āIt makes sense that they would, perhaps, take advantage of that and buy a home there,ā Andersen continued, adding that there might be āanother reasonā for the purchase. With a home in Portugal, Meghan is eligible for the Golden Passport.
āIt gives you access to all of the European countries,ā Andersen explained, noting that Meghan āneverā got a British passport. This means there are āother advantagesā to buying the property.
āIt can actually essentially be purchased through investment in Portuguese real estate,ā Andersen said of the Golden Passport. āHarry and Megan would indeed benefit to some extent from having a home in Portugal and obtaining one of those passports. Weāll see if that actually does happen.ā
