Sami Sheen is opening up about her dynamic with dad Charlie Sheen.
The actor, 59, made his first appearance on the April 1 episode of Denise Richards & Her Wild Things, where he met up with ex-wife Denise Richards and their daughter Lola Sheen. Sami was absent from the family lunch after Denise, 54, revealed that she had declined the invitation.
“I would rather do literally anything else than go to lunch with my father,” the 21-year-old told cameras.
Denise explained that they all have a complicated relationship with Charlie, calling it “up and down.”
“The girls have been through a lot with their dad,” she said.
At lunch, Lola, 19, joked that Sami got her “dark humor” from Charlie, and he laughed.
“Hopefully,” he said. “How is she? Is she good?”
“I don’t know,” replied Lola, who has been mending a major rift with her sister after the two went months without contact. “She got a spray tan the other day.”
In her confessional, Sami offered more insight into their history.
“Me and my dad haven’t really spoken much in the past five months,” she said, although she didn’t go into detail about why. “It goes in very big chunks with him. I think for the first 13 years of my life, it was pretty bad, and then we were okay for a couple years, and now it’s just like, okay.”
“I understand why Sami feels the way she does,” Denise chimed in. “It hasn’t always been perfect with he and Lola, either — with any of his kids. So I hope that he does recognize that because he’s missing out.”
“He really is missing out,” Sami added.
Lola, on the other hand, said she and Charlie are “so close,” which is “such a blessing.”
“My relationship with my dad has definitely improved,” she revealed. “We started getting pedicures together like every two to three weeks, and that’s like our favorite thing to do together.”
Denise, who was married to Charlie from 2002 until 2006, also reflected on how much her relationship with her ex has improved.
“Right after I got pregnant with Lola, it started to turn fast,” she recalled. “One day he went to work — there was an awful evening the night before — and I packed my s—, packed Sami’s stuff, called my housekeeper to come and we went to the Beverly Hills Hotel, and I filed for divorce in between dropping them off and a table reading for a show.”
In the years that followed, Denise and Charlie went through a very public divorce as he struggled with addiction, and they fought over finances and custody of their daughters.
“What I will say about you and I going through the difficulty we did with our divorce, you knew I always had your back at the end of the day,” she told him.
“I appreciate that,” he said. “If you didn’t, then we wouldn’t be able to have moments like this.”
