Delia Smith’s celebrity friends share sadness following death of her ‘beloved husband’

Delia Smith’s team have penned a heartbreaking tribute to her husband of 55 years, Michael Wynn-Jones, after the former publisher passed away at the age of 85.

Confirming his passing, a post on Delia’s social media pages read: “In memory of Michael Wynn Jones⁠. It is with great sadness that we received the news of the death of Michael Wynn Jones, Delia’s beloved husband and partner of more than 55 years.⁠

“Michael died peacefully at home on Monday 28 September, aged 85.⁠ We will remember Michael with enormous affection and gratitude, and we will always be grateful that, right from the very beginning of Delia Online, he was there behind the scenes, helping us along the way.⁠

“We all send our deepest sympathy and love to Delia, Tom, Hannah and all of Michael’s family and friends.⁠ Read our tribute to Michael via the link in our bio and select the image of Michael Wynn Jones⁠. Delia Online Team⁠.”

The caption accompanied an image of Michael on holiday, sitting in a rattan chair, with the sea stretching out behind him.

Fans were quick to pay tribute, with Jamie Oliver saying: “So sorry for your loss sending so much love,” while Nigella Lawson added: “All love to you @deliaonline. Am heartbroken for you x.”

A third penned: “This is just so sad. Delia & family must be devastated. Michael was a wonderful, kind, caring Gentleman. I hope Delia can get comfort knowing we all love & send her blessings to help get through this difficult time. Hold on to all those precious memories you made together. He will always be with you.”

Who was Michael Wynn-Jones?

Born in September 1941, Michael was a publisher and, at one point, the joint majority shareholder of Norwich City FC, alongside his wife.

Delia and Michael met in 1969 when Michael was working as the deputy editor of the Daily Mirror’s midweek colour supplement Mirror Magazine. The publication hired the star, who wasn’t yet a famous celebrity chef, and while it wasn’t love at first sight, love did start developing.

“I don’t think it was [love at first sight], but obviously he liked food a lot and I liked food and that was something that drew us together,” she shared.

Michael would go on to write for The Spectator, Twentieth Century and Nova.

Just like his wife, Michael held a lifelong love of Norwich City FC, and alongside being the club’s majority shareholder alongside the cooking legend, he has also served as their honorary life president. Their love for the club even saw them write off £2.1 million worth of debt they were owed.
