Former Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra was rushed to the hospital after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke.
In an Instagram statement shared Monday, Biafraâs record label, Alternative Tentacle, said the stroke was âcaused by high blood pressure.â
Biafra, 67, elaborated on his health crisis in his own statement.
âI hopped out of my bed because I needed to pee, and my left leg just collapsed under me and I fell to the floor,â the musician said. âI couldnât even break the fall with my left arm because it wasnât working either. I tried to hop back up again, and I couldnât. I realized I had âfallen and I canât get up!ââ
Biafra continued, âIt was this point I thought, Oh sh-t, Iâm having a stroke!â
The singer added, âI still have a lot of great stuff in me, but right now I gotta lotta of [sic] rehabbing to do.â
The record label said Biafra is âcurrently hospitalized but stable.â
âSpeaking for the Alternative Tentacles family, we are all just very thankful he is okay and getting the care that he needs,â the company added. âWe will update you all as we are able.â
Biafra was the original lead singer of the Dead Kennedys from the bandâs formation in 1978 until they broke up in 1986.
The group released four albums under Biafraâs leadership: âFresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetablesâ (1980), âPlastic Surgery Disastersâ (1982), âFrankenchristâ (1985) and âBedtime for Democracyâ (1986).
Dead Kennedys reformed in 2001, but without Biafra.
Three years earlier, Biafra was sued by his former bandmates East Bay Ray, Klaus Fluoride and D.H. Peligro (who died in 2022) over alleged unpaid royalties.
Biafra lost the legal battle after a California court found him guilty of âmalice, oppression and fraud,â and was ordered to pay his ex-bandmates outstanding royalties and punitive damages, according to NME.
During a 2025 interview with Guitar World, East Bay Ray explained that there are no plans for the band to reunite with Biafra after the lawsuit drama.
âItâs not an issue for me or Klaus,â he said. âItâs Biafra that turns down any offers for us to do something; we donât have any problem.â
The guitarist continued, âHe got caught with his hands in the till and wants to blame us for getting caught, but he should never have put his hands in there in the first place.â
