Davina McCall was forced to issue an apology on behalf of her co-star while presenting Comic Relief’s live show on the BBC.
The 58-year-old TV star was joined by comedian Nick Mohammed for the charity event’s Red Nose Day, which raises funds for communities needing food, healthcare and shelter.
During his challenge, which was to complete eight Rubik’s Cubes in one minute, the 45-year-old muttered expletives as he struggled to finish the brain teaser.
While he tipped away at the cubes, his former Celebrity Traitors co-star Joe Marler, 35, dressed in drag, tried to disrupt him on stage using a water pistol.
After the 60 seconds were up and Nick had failed to complete the challenge, he turned the cubes around to show them arranged into the word sorry, which he meant as an apology for his banishment of the former England rugby player on the game show hosted by Claudia Winkleman.
The pair of former castmates then walked over to join Davina, who told those watching at home: “Before we go any further, we just wanted to apologise if anybody heard any bad language there. It was a very high-stress situation.”
Looking baffled and confused, Nick turned to the host and asked: “Did I say… Was it me?” to which she replied: “I’m not sure, let’s not go over it again.”
The crowd attending the show at the broadcaster’s northern studio in Salford’s MediaCity could be heard laughing before letting out a smattering of loud applause.
Red Nose Day kicked off this year with a performance by Catherine Tate as her character Nan, and included sketches inspired by some of the biggest shows on the BBC, including The Traitors and Amandaland.
Davina was at the helm of the charity fundraiser and was joined by comedians Joel Dommett and Katherine Ryan.
She announced during the show that more than £30 million had been raised for Comic Relief.
Davina’s life update
The presenter’s appearance during Comic Relief came just months after she shared an update on her health following surgery for early-stage breast cancer and radiotherapy treatment.
Sharing an emotional video clip on her social media, the star revealed in January: “I finished my radio therapy today, and it was very emotional, much more emotional than I thought it would be. And I need a bit of positivity and brilliance.”
Underneath her video, The Royal Marsden, the hospital where the Princess of Wales underwent her cancer treatment, replied, writing: “Well done on completing your radiotherapy treatment today. You’ve got this! Sending lots of love,” with a purple love heart emoji.
