Craig Melvin’s behind-the-scenes Today Show behavior revealed as co-hosts take over segment

Craig Melvin made no secret of his readiness for the weekend during the September 25 broadcast of the Today Show. During the opening of the Third Hour, Craig informed viewers that it had been a busy few days.

“It’s been a long week,” he said, kickstarting the show, “Are you ok?” asked his co-star, Dylan Dreyer. Dylan and Al Roker then teamed up for their signature playful weather handoff, with Craig noticeably absent from the frame.

After the segment, Al revealed that Craig had stepped off camera to handle a few personal matters while he and Dylan took the reins. “It gave you a break to go over and do some other things,” he said. “Checked my mail,” replied Craig.

Today Show co-host dynamics 

Craig joined as a regular host on the NBC show following Hoda Kotb’s departure in January 2025. Since Craig’s permanent role on the show, he and Al have enjoyed a playful relationship and often jokingly call each other out on the show for their behind-the-scenes behavior.

Al previously spoke to HELLO! about the great dynamic he shares with his co-stars. “The great thing about the Today Show is that the sum is greater than its equal parts,” he shared. “They’ve all subbed, they’ve all stepped in, and we don’t miss a beat. So no matter what happens, we’re going to be in great shape,” Al ensured, noting that the show, which has been on the air since 1952, is “built to evolve.”

He continued: “Each one of us is very fortunate to be in this position, for however long we have, and then we pass the baton off to somebody else. So the future of the show is just as strong and bright no matter who steps in.”

Al and Dylan serve as the primary meteorologists on the NBC show, with Angie Lassman occasionally filling in.  “You know, I kind of miss them being here though; I want Al or Dylan so we can do the whole weather team unite,” said Angie during a July 2026 episode of the show.

“What do they say?” asked Laura. “The weather team assembled,” replied Craig. Laura then proceeded to share that Al and Dylan use music when presenting their infamous chant. “I’m glad they’re not here,” said Craig, to which Angie replied: “You said it, not me.”

Away from the show, Craig is first and foremost a family man. The host and his wife, Lindsay, met while both working at NBC Washington, with Craig enlisted as a news anchor in 2008 and Lindsay boasting the title of sports anchor. The pair tied the knot in 2011 with a wedding in Washington D.C. – the city where they met – at the Church of the Holy City. They later welcomed their son, Delano, in 2014, and their daughter, Sybil, in 2016.
